Position Summary

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse - Certified Nurse Practitioner (APRN- CNP) or Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) reflects the mission, vision, and values of UI Health and adheres to the UI Health Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines, & other regulatory/accreditation standards. The ideal candidate holds a degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant school & has Board Certification from a Nationally Accredited Certifying body. The APP functions as part of a multidisciplinary team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentialing committee to provide high-quality, cost-effective advanced care to patients. APP collaborates with supervising physicians in an area of clinical knowledge within the scope of license to assure patient health outcomes. The APP is required to have and maintain a faculty appointment in one of the UIC schools or colleges to practice at UI Health.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Works within the Bylaws of UI Health and in adherence to hospital and divisional policy.
  • Works collaboratively with other providers in the care of patients.
  • Performs an accurate history and physical examination of patients, as well as comprehensive or episodic health assessments, and develops patient care plans.
  • Performs procedures according to clinical delineation of privileges.
  • Provides prevention strategies and management of acute and chronic health problems.
  • Orders and interprets tests, treatments, and therapies within the scope of practice.
  • Prescribes medications, diet, supplies, prosthetic devices, and other home health aides or medication according to clinical privileges.
  • May provide other clinical duties within the scope of practice as directed under the emergency operation plan.
  • Demonstrates fiscal responsibility to positively impact the organization's financial performance while ensuring optimal patient care and safety.

  • Participates in peer review and competency assessment activities.
  • Establishes an effective relationship with the entire care team.
  • May lead and assist in research and evidence-based practice through participant selection, coordination of the protocol(s), data collection, and other associated activities.
  • Demonstrates accountability for professional conduct.
  • Advances professionalism by seeking opportunities to develop new skills and enhance current ones.
  • Provides comprehensive teaching strategies for patients and their families.
  • May provide education and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students and current and new employees, including but not limited to medical staff, residents, advanced practice providers, and nursing.
  • Provides formal and/or informal education or mentorship to internal and external groups pertinent to their specialty area.
  • Demonstrates excellent written and verbal communication, public speaking, presentation, critical thinking, and decision-making skills.
  • Clearly understands the implications of situations and uses sound judgment when dealing with multiple disciplines.
  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment and view success in relationship to group success.
  • Participates in program development.
  • Acts as a resource for clinical staff in the practice setting.
  • Consult with management in assessment, problem-solving, decision-making, and evaluating clinical/system issues and models of care.
  • Identifies and participates in quality-improvement initiatives within the practice setting and initiates change as appropriate.
  • Leads multidisciplinary teams to provide integrated delivery of patient care services.
  • May participate in developing and revising protocols or guidelines to reflect evidence-based changes in care management. May participate in activities that influence policy-making bodies to improve patient care.
  • Provides care for post-operative transplant patients on the transplant service.
  • Responsible for the management of patients in collaboration with Transplant surgeons, intensivists, and other Advanced Practice Providers.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduation from a nationally accredited APRN or PA training program required.
  • Current National Certification as Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP-BC)/Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Certification (AGACNP-BC) by American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) OR as a Physician Assistant-Certified (PA-C) by the Nationally accredited and recognized certifying body Commission on Certification of Physicians Assistants (NCCPA) required.
  • A current license as an APRN-CNP or Physician Assistant-Certified (PA-C) in the State of Illinois is required.
  • Current American Heart Associate Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Current Controlled Substance licensure required.
  • Effective communication skills (oral and written) that facilitate therapeutic relationships between physicians, APRN and PA providers as well as multi-disciplinary care team.
  • Demonstrated experience in leadership, multidisciplinary collaboration, interpersonal communication, education, clinical experience.
  • Ability to meet all requirements for medical staff privileges.
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience working as an Advanced Practice Provider in a surgical setting required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in an academic medical center preferred.
  • PA or ACNP experience in Critical Care or Emergency Medicine preferred.
  • Transplant ICU setting preferred.
