Position Overview


Primary Purpose of Position
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication is seeking an Assistant Professor of Broadcast Journalism. The primary responsibilities for the position include teaching undergraduate level courses, conducting research and grant writing, academic/student advising, student mentoring and recruitment, curriculum development, conducting scholarly activities and all other activities required for tenure. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, engaging in accreditation procedures, program assessment and service to the department, College and University as needed.

Instructional
* Evaluate and grade students' class work, assignments, and papers.
* Prepare and deliver lectures to undergraduate students (in-person & virtual formats).
* Initiate, facilitate, and moderate classroom discussions.
* Prepare course materials such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
* Compile, administer, and grade examinations, or assign this work to others.
* Maintain student attendance records, grades, and other required records.
* Plan, evaluate, and revise curricula, course content, and course materials and methods of instruction.
* Maintain regularly scheduled office hours (in-person and virtual) to advise and assist students.

Research
* Keep abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional organizations and conferences.
* Conduct research in a particular field of knowledge and publish findings in professional journals, books, or electronic media. Also, develop and write grant proposals to support research.

Administrative/Service
* Collaborate with members of the business community as needed to improve programs, to develop new programs, and to provide student access to learning opportunities such as internships.
* Supervise undergraduate or graduate teaching, internship, and research work.
* Develop and maintain course websites.
* Serve on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, departmental matters, and academic issues.
* Participate in student recruitment, registration, and placement activities.
* Participate in campus and community events.
* Act as advisor to student organizations.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication is housed within the College of Arts and Sciences. It offers a Bachelor of Science degree with concentrations in multimedia journalism, mass media production, and public relations, which are accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication ( ACEJMC). The Department has 550 majors and intends to propose a graduate degree program in in the near future. In accordance with the rapidly changing media landscape, the goal of the Department is to promote excellence in instruction, research and professional practice by preparing future journalists, professional communicators, and media practitioners. The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences houses the Departments of Criminal Justice, English, History and Political Science, Journalism and Mass Communication, Liberal Studies, and Visual and Performing Arts. CAHSS is an academic unit that reports to the Office of the Provost/Division of Academic Affairs and enrolls more than 1,950 students and has more than 130 faculty members.

Minimum Requirements
Ph.D. in Journalism, Mass Communications or Public Relations.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
Five years of professional and teaching experience.
Required License or Certification
