Residential Operations is part of Housing, Dining, and Auxiliary Enterprises (HDAE). Residential Operations maintains properties consisting of residence halls, single student apartments, family student apartments, and dining commons serving over 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students, faculty, and staff. Brief Summary of Job Duties

Under the general supervision of Sr Superintendent or Lead Auto Mechanic, the small engine mechanic is responsible for maintenance and repair of all motorized small engine equipment in HDAE. Maintains a preventative maintenance program. Documents and maintains repair records, and training records, as required by HDAE, EH&S & OSHA. Will comply with department safety and illness program as implemented by supervisor and /or co-workers. Interacts as a team member with sensitivity towards a multi-cultural work environment. Professional Expectation/Attitude Standard/Customer Service: Promotes customer service programs in the Grounds unit to residents/clients. Assists with the development and maintenance of a work environment that is conductive to meeting the mission of the organization. Completes job duties in a manner that demonstrates support for HDAE. Initiates communication directly with co-workers and/ or Supervisors to improve and clarify working relationships, identify problems and concerns, and seek resolution to work-related conflicts. Participates in staff training and development workshops and retreats as determined by supervisor.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working on small engines, ride-on mowers, electric carts, and tractors in an institution and/or commercial setting.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience working on small gasoline and battery-powered engines, ride-on mowers, electric carts, and tractors in an institution and/or commercial setting. Ex. College Residence Hall, Hotel, resort, school.
  • Basic computer experience Ability to install outdoor equipment Ex. BBQ grills, trash receptacles, bike racks, benches.
  • Experience in a customer service environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively with diverse clientele such as, employees from other departments, students, parents, etc.
  • Maintain safe and organized work area.

Special Conditions of Employment

  • Must maintain a valid CA driver's license, a satisfactory DMV record and enrollment in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program.
  • May be required to work shifts other than Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 3:30 pm, to meet the operational needs of the department.

Job Functions and Percentages of Time:

  • 60% Repairs & Maintenance - Inspect and maintain all grounds equipment to ensure safe and proper operation. Maintain and repair Bob cat tractor, backhoe mowers, rider mowers, John Deere tractors, electric carts for HDAE. Service and rebuild engines on lawn edgers, power mowers, roto tillers, hedge trimmers, long reach pole chainsaws, weed ships, back pack blowers, hand held blowers and a variety of other power tools such as: hand grinders, skill saws, and chain saws. Maintains and repairs all portable motorized equipment owned by Housing & Residential Services; generators, lighting, pressure washers, and emergency equipment. Manages all the hazardous waste generated by the Equipment Maintenance Operation for Housing & Residential Services. Communicates with EH&S regarding all used oil, anti-freeze, used oil filters and parts cleaning solvent, arranges for disposal, maintains log and maintains a log of deposits. Maintains fuel lockers, fuel levels, and ensures the HDAE is compliant with all regulations per EH&S requirements.
  • 20% Leadership - Provides leadership in the areas of safety training, proper use, daily maintenance and proper storage of all groundskeeping equipment ranging from power tools to backhoes and lawn mower tractors. Provides leadership to Equipment Operators on daily safety inspection of equipment, routine maintenance and minor repairs. Communicates requirements in both verbal and written forms.
  • 10% Equipment Ordering - Maintains an appropriate inventory of spare parts for all equipment and hand tools. Implements and maintains grounds equipment ID log. Establishes and maintains preventative maintenance program for all motorized equipment. Selects and purchases equipment and tools in collaboration with Superintendent of Grounds.
  • 10% Grounds Maintenance - Repairs and installs projects undertaken by grounds department. Including tasks such as: pick-up and delivery of equipment and supplies, repairing of walkways and fencing, installation of barbecue areas, installation of bike racks and patio furniture for all HDAE Services properties.
