What you'll do and what you'll bring:

Position Function: Under supervision, perform duties required in the operation and maintenance of natural gas fired boilers, auxiliary equipment, steam and condensate return distribution system, complying withEPA,OSHA, and all appropriate operating regulations and codes.

Duties & Responsibilities:

1. Operate and monitor natural gas fired boilers including combustion control and pollution control equipment. Record meter readings and maintain log sheets.

Requires the physical ability to stoop, crouch, crawl, kneel, grasp, finger, lift, reach, balance, climb, talk, hear, work with arms and hands extended, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Task requires the ability to operate hand and power tools, ladders, scaffolds, and Heating Plant instrumentation and testing equipment. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme heat and cold, noise, dust, heights, confined spaces, and may be required to wear filter mask, respirator, and various protective clothing and/or equipment. Task requires the mental ability to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions and information and to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions and information.

2. Operating heat plant auxiliary equipment (water treatment, feed water pumps, air compressors, valves, emergency power generating equipment, etc.)

Requires the physical ability to stoop, crouch, kneel, crawl, grasp, finger, lift, reach, balance, climb, work with arms and hands extended, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Task requires the ability to operate hand and power tools, ladders, and scaffolds. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme heat and cold, noise, dust, heights, confined spaces, and may be required to wear filter mask, respirator, and various protective clothing and/or equipment. Task requires the mental ability to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions and information and to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions and information.

3. Performing duties related to the construction, replacement, repair, and maintenance of all types of steam distribution equipment; perform maintenance duties such as pump, turbine, compressor and fan rebuilding.

Task requires the ability to operate hand and power tools, ladders, scaffolds, and Heating Plant instrumentation and testing equipment. Employee is exposed inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme heat and cold, noise, dust, heights, confined spaces, and may be required to wear filter mask, respirator, and various protective clothing and/or equipment. Task requires the mental ability to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions and information and to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions and information.

4. Performing duties related to the replacement and repair of the boiler furnace refractory; install sludge drying equipment.

Requires the physical ability to stoop, crouch, kneel, crawl, grasp, finger, lift, reach, climb, and exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally. Task requires the visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Task requires the ability to operate hand tools and Heating Plant instrumentation. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme heat and cold, noise, dust, heights, confined spaces, and may be required to wear filter mask, respirator, and various protective clothing and/or equipment. Task requires the mental ability to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions and information and to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions and information.

5. Performing pipe fitting, welding, metal work, rigging, low voltage electricalwork, insulating and painting tasks.

Requires the physical ability to stoop, crouch, kneel, crawl, grasp, finger, lift, reach, balance, climb, talk, hear, work with arms and hands extended, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Task requires the ability to operate hand and power tools, ladders, scaffolds, and Heating Plant instrumentation. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme heat and cold, noise, dust, heights, confined spaces and may be required to wear filter mask, respirator, and various protective clothing and/or equipment. Task requires the mental ability to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions and information and to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions and information.

6. Performing water treatment tests, adding chemicals, maintaining water treatment equipment.

Requires the physical ability to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, finger, grasp, work with arms and hands extended, and exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to distinguish color and perceive depth. Task requires the ability to operate hand tools, painting, cleaning, lubricating, and vibration equipment, ladders, scaffolds, and Heating Plant instrumentation and testing equipment. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme heat and cold, noise, dust, heights, confined spaces, and may be required to wear filter mask, respirator, and various protective clothing and/or equipment. Task requires the mental ability to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions and information and to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions and information.

7. Maintaining cleanliness and orderliness of work areas, equipment, and vehicles.

Requires the physical ability to stoop, crouch, crawl, kneel, grasp, finger, lift, reach, climb, balance, talk, hear, work with arms and hands extended, and exert in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently, and 20 pounds of force constantly. Task requires the visual ability to perceive depth, distinguish color, and align parts and equipment. Task requires the ability to operate hand and power tools, ladders, scaffolds, welding machines, cutting torches, and Heating Plant instrumentation and testing equipment. Employee is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme heat and cold, noise, dust, heights, confined spaces, and may be required to wear various protective clothing and/or equipment. Task requires the mental ability to receive, comprehend, follow, and provide oral instructions and information and to read, comprehend, follow, and provide written instructions and information.

8. Acquire and maintain knowledge of various job-related chemicals, environmental concerns, and current technological improvements/advancements.

9. Demonstrate through periodic examination proficiency in all aspects of the operation including but not limited to boiler operation, plant operation and emergency procedures.

10. Perform other duties as assigned.
May require any or all of the above-mentioned abilities.

Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent (GED).

1.Successful completion of an apprenticeship program as Stationary Engineer as approved by the Bureau of Apprenticeship and Training, or at least six (6) years of verified proof of experience in operation and maintenance of a gas, and/or oil fired boiler plant or related equipment, or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable job knowledge can be acquired as determined by Ball State University.
2.Must possess and maintain a valid Indiana Driver's License and be insurable under the university's auto fleet policy.
3.Must be able to read and comprehend all specified policies and procedures for safety, hazardous materials information, University policies, procedures, and communications, and perform mathematical calculations.
4.Must be able to perform all mental and physical requirements as outlined in each job duty/responsibility.
5.You must be 18 years or older.

Preferred Qualifications: Vocational school training

1.More than six (6) years of verified proof of experience in operation and maintenance of a gas, and/or oil-fired boiler plant or related equipment.
