Job Summary About Us: Located within the Mass General Brigham Department of Emergency Preparedness and Continuity (DEPC), the Center for Disaster Medicine (CDM) hosts the research, educational, and external service programs of the Department. CDM programs range from specific efforts to enhancing Regional healthcare emergency readiness to broader, academically-based initiatives focused on expanding knowledge within the field of healthcare emergency preparedness. The CDM team is comprised of interdisciplinary subject matter experts, including national and international experts in their fields, leading the development of preparedness programs and resources to meet current and future healthcare challenges. About the Work: Under the direction of the Director of CDM, the Assistant Director, CDM provides leadership and strategic direction for CDM with a focus on the Center's healthcare preparedness work, including the Region 1 Regional Disaster Health Response System (RDHRS). The Assistant Director works with the Director, Vice President, and Chief Preparedness and Continuity Officer (CDM Executive Director) to develop strategic direction for the department and specifically the Center's healthcare preparedness initiatives. The Assistant Director is a subject matter expert who serves as a member of the CDM Leadership Team and collaborates with other CDM leaders to provide strategic direction to funded programs, cultivate relationships with stakeholders, support the professional development of CDM personnel, help to identify new funding opportunities, and contribute to the writing of grants, reports and academic publications. Qualifications Principal Duties and Responsibilities Leadership Responsibilities Serves as a leader for CDM within the MGB Department of Emergency Preparedness and Continuity Co-leads development of strategic plans and work plans, ensuring growth of CDM initiatives, with a focus on healthcare preparedness programming. Represents CDM by serving as a subject matter expert and/or lead on local, regional, and national working groups. Coordinates with other leaders within the MGB Department of Emergency Preparedness and Continuity to support the overall mission and priorities for the Department. Leads engagement activities to strengthen healthcare preparedness across all of Region 1 and to support national readiness initiatives. Develops and maintains effective working relationships with all partner organizations and with community and statewide/regional partners. Represents the Region 1 RDHRS on national working groups and committees, including collaboration with other RDHRS Regions. Provides direction to personnel to develop innovative educational modalities for all-hazard and disaster response for internal and Regional programs. Provides leadership for CDM's Region 1 Medical Operations Coordination Center (MOCC). Leads strategic goal setting and guides team members in project planning and implementation efforts. Positions the RDHRS as a national leader in Regional healthcare preparedness. Provides direction to CDM staff to guide Region 1 RDHRS MOCC readiness and to ensure that response plans and associated policies and procedures are in place and meet current, relevant regulatory and industry standards. Manages several CDM externally funded programs and contributes to development of proposals for new funding opportunities. Coordinates with other team members to provide data for the annual operating budget, grant applications, and programmatic reports and to support grant documentation. Response Operations Leads and/or supports activations of CDM response capabilities, including the RDHRS MOCC, as assigned. Ensures process improvement occurs post-response for any activations. Supports program response operations (following appropriate onboarding and training) by serving as an on-call Duty Officer for assigned periods of time. Personnel and Human Resource Management Directly supervises staff managing CDMs healthcare preparedness work (approximately 3-6 FTEs). Leads healthcare preparedness staffing decisions, including hiring, training, and support of all team personnel. Additional Job Details (if applicable) Skills and Competencies Required Demonstrates exceptional people management and leadership. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Experience leading strategic and work planning initiatives. Significant experience leading complex programs and projects in healthcare readiness - including experience leading dynamic projects, setting realistic goals, and delivering quality work products. Proven experience leading teams in a complex, multidisciplinary environment. Excellent organizational skills and ability to lead teams to complete assigned tasks in a given time period. Strong leadership skills, interpersonal skills, consensus building skills. Ability to provide clear direction and leadership in stressful and complex situations. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office suite applications; specifically, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint Maturity and operational problem solving/decision making experience. Ability to function effectively in stressful and complex situations. Experience in emergency management in a hospital and/or healthcare setting is required. Experience and working knowledge of the Hospital Incident Command System (HICS), including completion of ICS/NIMS 100,200, 700, 800 courses. Attention to detail and creation of exceptional work products. Experience with project management/task tracking software. Qualifications Education Bachelor's Degree: Required Master's Degree: Preferred Experience: Required: 5-7 years of relevant experience Working Conditions Works in an office setting and potentially in the clinical environment of the Emergency Department and other patient care units. May be required to travel to offsite facilities and to attend meetings outside of regularly scheduled hours, as needed. May be required to report to the hospital or offsite locations outside of normal business hours to respond to events that require emergency support. Must be available by pager/cell phone outside of normal business hours during assigned on-call shifts. May be required to work extended shifts for multiple periods during emergency events.
