ATIS Support Engineer

ABOUT THE POSITION

The Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS) Support Engineer position plays a key role in supporting the operation, administration, maintenance, and integration of hardware and software systems used to support transportation operations at the New York State Department of Transportation Region 10 INFORM Transportation Management Center in Hauppauge, New York.

The Region 10 INFORM Transportation Management Center operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. As a result, the systems, applications, network infrastructure, databases, and Intelligent Transportation System elements that support TMC operations must remain secure, reliable, and fully operational.

This position works closely with NYSDOT personnel to support the INFORM Advanced Traffic Management System/Advanced Traveler Information System architecture, including Foundation and OpenReach systems by CoVal Systems, Inc. The role includes system operation, system administration, hardware and software support, software configuration, ITS device integration, troubleshooting, documentation, training, and support for ongoing system enhancements.

The ATIS Support Engineer reports directly to the NYSDOT Project Manager or Operations Manager.

Support, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot Advanced Traveler Information System (ATIS) and Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) applications used by the NYSDOT Region 10 INFORM Transportation Management Center.
• Develop, maintain, and enhance software applications, scripts, utilities, and automation tools using Python, Java, and other applicable technologies to support transportation management operations.
• Design, develop, and maintain web applications, internal tools, and user interfaces that improve access to transportation information, operational data, and system functionality.
• Develop and maintain Application Programming Interfaces (APIs), data feeds, and software integrations between ATIS/ATMS applications, databases, internal systems, and external services.
• Develop interactive dashboards, reports, data visualizations, and analytical solutions using transportation and operational data to support performance monitoring, trend analysis, management reporting, and data-driven decision-making.
• Develop and maintain database queries, stored procedures, data-processing workflows, and reporting solutions, and support application-level database operations, data quality, and troubleshooting.
• Deploy, configure, maintain, and troubleshoot web applications and application services hosted in Windows Server and Ubuntu/Linux environments.
• Troubleshoot software, application, database, data-interface, and application communication issues in a 24/7/365 operational environment, coordinating with systems, network, security, and hardware engineering personnel as needed.
• Evaluate existing applications, workflows, reporting capabilities, and operational processes and develop software, automation, analytics, and data-driven improvements.
• Explore appropriate applications of artificial intelligence, machine learning, predictive analytics, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and other emerging technologies to enhance transportation management and operational decision support.
• Maintain source code, configurations, testing, deployment procedures, and technical documentation using established version-control and software-development practices.
• Provide technical support, documentation, training, and guidance to TMC personnel and coordinate with NYSDOT staff, engineering teams, vendors, partner organizations, and other stakeholders.

• Strong programming skills in Python and Java, with experience developing, debugging, maintaining, and supporting applications, scripts, and automation tools.
• Strong knowledge of SQL and relational databases, preferably Microsoft SQL Server, including querying, stored procedures, data transformation, reporting, troubleshooting, and application/database integration.
• Experience with data analytics and visualization, including developing interactive dashboards, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), automated reports, and analytical tools using Power BI or comparable technologies.
• Experience developing web applications, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern front-end and/or back-end development technologies.
• Experience developing and consuming REST APIs and web services and working with data formats such as JSON and XML.
• Experience deploying, hosting, configuring, and troubleshooting web applications and services in Windows Server and Ubuntu/Linux environments, with familiarity with technologies such as Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS), Apache, or Nginx.
• Experience with Git or comparable version-control systems and software-development practices including debugging, testing, documentation, deployment, and change management.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to analyze operational datasets, identify trends and anomalies, and translate operational needs into practical software, reporting, visualization, and automation solutions.
• Understanding of Advanced Traffic Management Systems (ATMS), Advanced Traveler Information Systems (ATIS), Transportation Management Center (TMC) operations, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), or comparable real-time operational systems is preferred.
• Familiarity with ITS devices and National Transportation Communications for Intelligent Transportation System Protocol (NTCIP) sufficient to understand their interaction with ATMS/ATIS applications and coordinate with systems, network, and field engineering personnel.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to document technical work, support and train users, and collaborate effectively with technical teams, transportation operations personnel, management, vendors, and external stakeholders.

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Information Sciences, or a related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience with ATMS/ATIS system software.
• Minimum of 2 years of supervisory experience.
• Valid driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Familiarity with artificial intelligence and machine learning, including Python-based data science, predictive analytics, anomaly detection, computer vision, or AI-assisted applications.
• Familiarity with GIS and geospatial technologies, including spatial analysis, mapping, ArcGIS, QGIS, web mapping, or Python geospatial libraries.
• Experience with transportation management software platforms, including Foundation III by CoVal Systems, Inc. and OpenReach and T-REX by TRANSCOM.

The full-time annual base salary range for this position is $116,000 to $131,000 if located in Hauppauge, NY. The base salary offered will be determined based on job-related factors, including geographic location, internal equity, experience, credentials, skills, education, work schedule, and other factors permitted by law. The posted salary range reflects base pay only. Additional compensation and benefits available to eligible employees are outlined in our Total Rewards Program.

Annual base salary is one component of VHB's Total Rewards package.
