DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
Under direction of the Personnel Coordinator, with the work periodically assigned by others (e.g., course faculty member), the Course Technician takes a lead role in overall organizing field course logistics associated with student field work, transportation, and accommodations for field intensive course. Incumbent may also take a lead role in water and field safety which may include oversight of SCUBA, snorkeling, on-the-ground field support, and small boat operations. Incumbent also participates in and assists in oversight of course safety (transportation, logistical).
JOB SUMMARY
Involves instructional or program activities related to recreation, leisure, and fitness in an accredited environment; provides first aid and emergency care as necessary, and responds to user / customer needs.

Budgeted Salary: $6,000 in total compensation split over two months for each quarter by agreement

JOB DUTIES
60% - Course Logistics
- Coordinates organization and acquisition of field course supplies, field room and board, and transportation logistics.
- Prior to departure to the field incumbent coordinates with Departmental staff in the purchase and organization of field teaching supplies and food.
- Working with course instructors and teaching assistants, individual takes a lead role in identifying and purchasing needed items.
- During field portion of the course, individual takes a lead role in organizing, maintaining, and tracking field supplies and equipment to ensure compliance with assigned budget.
- Organizes menu planning, food purchase, and student preparation of food in the field.
Will need to operate a vehicle to run errands related to procuring food and field supplies and traveling between reserves
20% - Development/Repair and Maintenance
- As needed, develops list of necessary field equipment, and coordinates maintenance and repair of course supplies and equipment with departmental support staff.
- Reports safety issues to appropriate personnel and recommends improvements.
20% - Planning/Meetings/Administrative Tasks
- Meets with course instructors, teaching assistants, and others to plan, set priorities, receive direction, schedule, and coordinate activities.
- Processes, submits, and maintains all paperwork and communications for activities such as purchasing, time records, reimbursements, etc.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- BA in biology, marine biology, ecology, environmental studies, geology or related field, or knowledge and experience such as that attained through coursework, including laboratory experience.
- Experience in field logistical support.
- Experience in marine and/or terrestrial fieldwork.
- Basic tools and equipment experience.
- Basic computer software experience (e.g., Microsoft Word, Excel, e-mail).
- Excellent judgment and a sufficient level of maturity and confidence to make appropriate safety and logistical decisions prior to going into the field and during field work.
- Ability to pay close attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy.
- Ability to record, manage and process data.
- Ability to create and implement protocols.
- Ability to give clear, concise instructions both verbally and written.
- Excellent organizational skills, with ability to prioritize workload effectively.
- Ability to work and interact effectively with diverse groups of faculty, staff, and students and exercise good judgment and discretion.
- Ability to oversee and direct staff, students and other field support staff.
- Ability to effectively oversee crew and equipment in difficult field operations, and the ability to exert command and show appropriate leadership in emergency situations.
- Ability to safely operate field transport (vans, trucks).
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
- Selected candidate must pass the employment misconduct disclosure process.
- Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California and be able to participate in the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) pull notice program.
- Ability to work long periods of time in wilderness conditions and to travel to remote areas.
- Ability to perform work in a rugged physical environment and inclement weather with challenging infrastructure requirements.
- The selected candidate will be required to work all scheduled hours on-site.
- Ability to work a variable schedule including evenings and weekends.
- Ability to wear proper safety attire (long pants, closed-toe shoes, etc.) and personal protective equipment common in a laboratory setting.
- Ability to read signs and follow directions on labels that are written in English as well as ability to read and understand Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and the proper use of chemical compounds.
- Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
- Ability to travel within a defined regional or service area.
- Physical ability to hike and haul gear in the wilderness.
- Willingness and ability to accommodate flexible schedule to travel for up to several weeks at a time and work early mornings or late evenings as teaching schedule determines.
- Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
