Optimized Process Designs, LLC (OPD), a Koch Engineered Solutions company, is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Mechanical Engineer Intern to join our team for Summer 2027. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience supporting mechanical engineering activities across engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects in the natural gas and petrochemical industries. You will work closely with experienced engineers and project teams to support equipment design, procurement, and project execution from early development through construction and commissioning.

This role is based on-site Monday through Friday at our headquarters in Katy, TX.

This role is not eligible for visa sponsorship.


Our Team

For over 45 years, OPD has provided turnkey engineering, procurement, and construction services for some of the largest natural gas and gas liquids processing facilities in the United States. Our capabilities have expanded to include full custom design/build solutions for large-scale facilities.

You will be part of a collaborative, cross-functional engineering team working across disciplines including Process, Mechanical, Civil/Structural, and Electrical. Our team is focused on delivering high-quality projects safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

What You Will Do

  • Support development of equipment specifications Request for Quote (RFQ) packages for purchase of new equipment on active jobs
  • Assist in reviewing vendor drawings and technical documentation for purchased mechanical equipment on active jobs
  • Participate in reviews of project documentation such as PFDs, P&IDs, equipment lists, and 3D models
  • Collaborate with project teams to support procurement and technical evaluations
  • Participate in engineering reviews, risk assessments, and safety-related activities (e.g., PHA/HAZOP)
  • Gain exposure to pipe specifications, welding requirements, inspection processes, and testing plans
  • Provide support to construction teams and gain exposure to commissioning and startup activities including site visits
  • Gain hands-on exposure to a variety of mechanical engineering career paths by partnering with experienced engineers across multiple functions and projects.

Who You Are (Basic Qualifications)

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline
  • Eligible for full-time employment on or before Summer 2029
  • Eligible to work permanently in the United States for any employer without requiring a visa transfer or via sponsorship

What Will Put You Ahead

  • Exposure to or experience with mechanical engineering concepts related to rotating or static equipment through coursework, projects, or internships
  • Exposure to engineering drawings such as PFDs or P&IDs
  • Prior internship or professional experience, in a related or other field
