The Director of Business Intelligence serves as the primary execution leader for the Business Intelligence team, owning the day-to-day operational delivery and execution of the BI roadmap, ensuring work progresses against agreed priorities and timelines. The Director owns day-to-day management of BI staff, driving delivery against the departmental roadmap, ensuring data governance standards are embedded in all solutions, and serving as a key partner to business stakeholders across the University. Where the AVP sets direction from BI strategy, architectural vision, governance, financials, and the roadmap; the Director owns the execution of this direction into tangible, high-quality analytical solutions that enable data-driven decision-making and ROI across Herzing University. Occasional weekend/evening hours may be needed during releases, maintenance and critical support needs. REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor's degree in Business Intelligence, Data Science, Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field required. Master's degree in a relevant discipline preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in business intelligence, data analytics, or data engineering required.
- Minimum of 2 years of direct people management or formal team leadership experience required.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience with the Microsoft BI and data platform stack: Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake, Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, SQL Server, and related services.
- Strong working knowledge of dimensional modeling, semantic layer development, and enterprise reporting architecture.
Preferred:
- Experience with Salesforce/Education Cloud analytics or CRM-integrated data architectures.
- Experience in a higher education environment.
- Familiarity with IT portfolio and roadmap management processes (e.g., ServiceNow, DevOps boards).
- Experience delivering or supporting machine learning or AI-powered analytics use cases in a production environment.
Compensation is determined based on the qualifications, experience, and circumstances of each hire. It is uncommon for new employees to start near the top of the salary range. The salary range for this role is $114,65 to $155,136 RESPONSIBILITIES: Roadmap Execution & Delivery
- Lead the day-to-day execution of the Business Intelligence team roadmap, ensuring projects are scoped, tracked, and delivered to committed timelines and quality standards.
- Own delivery of priority BI initiatives including cloud data architecture (Azure/Fabric), Power BI reporting, data governance operationalization, Salesforce/Education Cloud analytics, and advanced analytics/ML use cases.
- Translate strategic objectives set by the AVP into actionable project plans, team assignments, and measurable milestones with clear acceptance criteria.
- Maintain delivery discipline across the team, facilitating sprint planning, standups, retrospectives, and roadmap reviews in alignment with IT portfolio management processes.
- Proactively identify and escalate delivery risks, blockers, and dependencies; develop mitigation plans and communicate status to the AVP and stakeholders with clarity and precision.
- Ensure all work progresses through established intake, governance, and delivery stage gates as defined by the IT Roadmap process.
Team Leadership & Development
- Directly manage, coach, and develop Business Intelligence team members, setting clear expectations, providing regular feedback, and building individual capability aligned to team and institutional needs.
- Cultivate a high-performance, accountable, and cohesive team culture that values curiosity, ownership, continuous improvement, and data quality.
- Establish and maintain a healthy team operating rhythm including workload prioritization, capacity management, and recognition of strong execution.
- Partner with the AVP on talent planning, performance management, and professional development planning for each team member.
- Reduce AVP operational and tactical involvement by building a team capable of self-directed, high-quality delivery.
Data Architecture & Engineering Oversight
- Oversee the design, development, and maintenance of BI solutions across the Microsoft stack including Azure Data Factory, Azure Data Lake, Microsoft Fabric, Power BI, and the enterprise medallion architecture.
- Ensure all data pipelines, semantic models, and reporting assets are built to governance, quality, and security standards, consistently and repeatably.
- Lead or coordinate onboarding of priority enterprise data sources into the unified lakehouse/warehouse (e.g., clinicals, Salesforce/Education Cloud, enrollment, finance).
- Maintain architectural documentation, runbooks, and operational monitoring frameworks to ensure platform stability and scalability.
Analytics & Reporting Delivery
- Oversee the development and ongoing maintenance of executive KPI dashboards, operational reports, and self-service analytics solutions in Power BI and related tools.
- Ensure analytical solutions are built to serve the full student lifecycle: enrollment, academics, clinical programs, financial aid, faculty engagement, and retention.
- Support the delivery of a minimum of two operationalized machine learning or AI-powered analytics use cases, demonstrating measurable business impact using the Microsoft stack.
- Enable stakeholder self-service by promoting governed, high-quality semantic models and providing training and enablement resources.
Stakeholder Partnership & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Serve as a key point of contact for business stakeholders seeking BI support - gathering requirements, managing expectations, and ensuring delivery aligns to intended outcomes.
- Collaborate with IT peers (Applications, Infrastructure, Operations) to ensure data platform dependencies, integrations, and security controls are coordinated effectively.
- Partner with the AVP to support executive and senior leadership with data-driven insights, including dashboard reviews, KPI reporting, and governance briefings.
- Build trust and credibility across the institution through consistent, high-quality delivery and clear, transparent communication.
Strategic Support & Organizational Development
- Actively contribute to IT leadership discussions, roadmap planning, and departmental goal setting in partnership with the AVP.
- Represent the Business Intelligence team in cross-functional project teams and institutional initiatives as directed.
