Position Overview

Under the supervision of the Diagnostic Radiology Manager, Assistant Chief Technologist, and licensed Radiologic Technologists, the Radiologic Technologist Trainee performs a variety of technical and professional duties utilizing imaging equipment to produce high-quality radiographic images for interpretation by the radiologist.

All duties are performed in accordance with departmental and organizational policies and procedures. To support operational needs, staff may be assigned to work at any Yale New Haven Health Diagnostic Radiology location regardless of their regularly assigned work site.


Responsibilities

Perform High-Quality Diagnostic Imaging

  • Performs quality, efficient diagnostic radiographic examinations utilizing appropriate imaging protocols and age-specific standards.
  • Verifies physician orders and exam requisitions prior to imaging procedures.
  • Assists in obtaining quality diagnostic images while maintaining patient safety and comfort.

Operate Radiographic Equipment

  • Under the direct supervision of a Radiologic Technologist, operates radiographic equipment to achieve proper technical results.
  • Conducts daily inspections of radiographic equipment to ensure optimal performance and image quality.
  • Adheres to established radiation safety practices and departmental protocols.

Maintain a Safe and Efficient Imaging Environment

  • Prepares examination rooms to ensure a clean, safe, and organized environment.
  • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies and replaces used supplies promptly after patient care activities.
  • Ensures readiness of exam rooms to support efficient department operations.

Deliver Exceptional Patient Care

  • Provides compassionate, patient-centered care using age-specific standards.
  • Explains procedures thoroughly to promote patient understanding, comfort, and cooperation.
  • Addresses patient concerns and comfort needs before, during, and after procedures.
  • Promotes a positive patient experience while maintaining safety and dignity.

Documentation and Communication

  • Performs record-keeping and customer service functions to support departmental operations.
  • Accurately edits and completes examinations in Imagecast to ensure proper medical record documentation and billing.
  • Effectively communicates with patients, providers, technologists, and team members.

Professional Development and Education

  • Participates in educational, training, and professional development opportunities.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to learn and grow within the profession.
  • Supports the education of new technologists, students, and residents as appropriate.

Support Patient Experience Goals

  • Consistently demonstrates friendly, courteous, and professional interactions with patients and families.
  • Clearly identifies self and role while promoting a Patient and Family-Centered Care experience.
  • Explains procedures thoroughly and encourages questions.
  • Proactively addresses patient comfort concerns.
  • Thanks patients at the completion of the procedure and ensures all questions have been addressed.
  • Supports departmental patient satisfaction goals and quality standards.

Qualifications

Education

  • Currently enrolled in an A.M.A.-approved Radiologic Technology program and ARRT registry eligible.
  • Associate's Degree required.

Experience

  • Demonstrated technical skills consistent with entry-level standards in routine radiography.
  • ARRT certification by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) and Connecticut State Radiographer License required within 120 days of hire.
  • CPR Certification required within six (6) months of hire.

Licensure

  • ARRT certification required within 120 days of hire.
  • Connecticut State Radiographer License required within 120 days of hire.

Special Skills

  • Basic understanding and technical competency in routine radiography.
  • Knowledge of CR/Digital Imaging techniques.
  • Familiarity with computer applications and PACS systems.
  • Strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented healthcare environment.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds to assist with patient transfers and positioning.
