Department Statement
The Office of Campus Safety is responsible for maintaining a safe and secure living and working environment that is conducive to learning and is consistent with the academic goals and policies of the institution in an environment of respect. Our primary concern is the well-being of our students, staff, faculty, and visitors. Campus Safety personnel are recognized and authorized with NYS Security Guard status.

This type of appointment is not approved to work more than 999 hours per year for all positions combined. Should incumbents work more than a total of 999 hours in a year the appointment may not continue beyond one year of service.
Accountabilities
The Campus Safety Officer is accountable for providing patrol and dispatch (911) services to ensure the safety and security of the university community. Key responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining a safe and secure living and learning environment for the campus community.
  • Adopting a customer-oriented approach to providing campus safety services.
  • Utilizing a team-oriented approach to achieve individual and department goals.
  • Monitoring university community members for adherence to the Student Code of Conduct and university policies.



Specific Duties:
Maintain comprehensive knowledge of university and department policies and procedures.

  • Enforce the Student Code of Conduct and university policies.
  • Receive emergency and non-emergency calls; determine priority and dispatch personnel accordingly.
  • Coordinate incident response with 911 dispatch and outside agencies.
  • Conduct timely case investigations and write detailed case reports.
  • Patrol campus for suspicious behavior, safety hazards, and public assistance opportunities.
  • Perform building tours, lock-ups, and unlocks.
  • Provide vehicular and pedestrian traffic control and assist motorists with disabled vehicles.
  • Enforce university parking regulations and issue citations.
  • Provide basic first aid and lay first responder emergency medical care.
  • Participate in department community outreach and safety education programs.

This position has been designated as a Campus Security Authority ( CSA), in
accordance with the federal statutory requirements of the Jeanne Clery Act. CSAs are
required to and responsible for reporting allegations of crimes they receive from students
and employees to the Campus Safety Department.

Professional Experience/ Qualifications

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask in stressful environments.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid New York State driver's license and meet and maintain the requirements of the University's Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Use Policy.
  • Able to obtain and maintain a valid New York State (DCJS) security guard license
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a designated Field Training and Evaluation program.
  • Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a background investigation.
  • May be required to complete specialized training, as designated.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Valid New York State (DCJS) security guard license.
  • Previous related work experience as a campus safety/security officer and/or prior experience working in a college/university environment is preferred.
  • Experience in recognizing and resolving and/or referring to emergency and stressful situations.
  • Knowledge of local and state laws.

  • CPR, EMT, and First Aid certification.

Education
High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate's degree in criminal justice or related field preferred.
Physical Requirements
Ability to climb stairs, patrol on foot, stand/sit for long periods, and drive a motor vehicle.
Other Information
A current valid driver's license, in accordance with the University's Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Use Policy is required.

Must be willing to work a combination of the following available shifts. Priority will be given to candidates available to work both rotations or a full schedule.

  2. Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 6 p.m. - 6 a.m.
