Primary Duties

Swim Lesson Instructors are responsible for instructing American Red Cross progressive swim lessons and teaching participants to be safe when they are in, on, and around water. Lessons are available to infants/toddlers, preschool, youth, and adults in group and/or private lessons. We are also looking for swim instructors to coach junior swim team style classes, stroke clinics, and master's level swim practices. Positions are available to both certified and uncertified staff.




  • Effectively teach and give feedback to students during swim lessons
  • Maintain current attendance records
  • Maintain the class participants' progress
  • Record class participants' results on the report card
  • Attend and participate in all scheduled WSI meetings and trainings
  • Forward patrons with specific questions or concerns to the Aquatic Coordinator or Aquatic Supervisor
  • Maintain current certifications
  • Other duties as assigned

Additional Information

  • Campus Recreation provides additional development opportunities for staff beyond job duties, including the possibility to attend varying conferences at state, regional, and national levels as well as inter-departmental committee opportunities through our student-led organization, Recreational Development & Leadership (RDL).
  • This position may require early mornings, late nights, and holidays.
  • Hour requirement: one lesson a week

Minimum Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Enrolled at a post-secondary institution or a secondary school.
  • Enrolled at least part-time (one or more credit hours if at a post-secondary institution), except for summer term, or will be a registered student during the next academic term.
  • "Enrollment" shall include:

    • The period between two successive terms for which the student is enrolled.
    • The one "off" term in each academic year in which the student is not enrolled. Student employee status may be retained for one additional term following either graduation or withdrawal from enrollment.


  • Must be at least 16 years of age.

Compensation and Benefits

  • Pay rate - $13.40/hour for Certified Staff holding active American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certifications
  • Pay rate - $12.40/hour for non-certified assisting instructors
  • 20% discount on programs and services (excluding Pro Shop)
