Occupational Summary

Classification created to permit compensation to individuals performing scholastic research on Campus and in the Medical Center using University facilities without detailed supervision. The use of this classification is reserved for those who have either received a doctorate or have demonstrated equivalent professional attainment. This classification is administered on Campus through the Office of the Provost and in the Medical Center through the Office of the Chancellor for Health Affairs. It is not subject to the Wage and Salary system.

Work Performed

The Research Scholar is expected to perform wet lab research in skeletal muscle biology, including investigating the molecular mechanisms that regulate muscle function, and how muscle physiology impacts other organ systems. The candidate is expected to perform wet lab research (75%).

The Research Scholar will use mouse models and human cells to study signaling mechanisms and metabolic pathways that regulate regenerative function of muscle stem cells called satellite cells (PMID: 17540178; 22493066; 28094257; 33068545).

Recent single cell RNA-seq studies in the lab have led to the discovery of a subset of satellite cells with immune cell properties (PMID: 32248062). Ongoing studies aim to dissect the origin and function of these immunomyoblasts (i.e. immune gene-expressing myoblasts).

Additional interests of the lab are to understand the role of lipid droplets and fatty acid metabolism in satellite cell biology (PMID: 35045287; 37063787; 37334900; 37883229).

The Research Scholar will write manuscripts (25%) on the research subjects.
