THE POSITION

The Department of Environmental Protection is seeking a skilled Chemist 2 in Dauphin County to support critical environmental protection efforts. In this role, you will analyze environmental samples for significant chemical constituents using specialized laboratory instruments and established analytical methods. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

The role involves receiving environmental samples and performing a variety of analytical procedures to support the laboratory's mission. The primary focus is the analysis of drinking water, non-potable water, soil, pure product (COWS), and air samples for volatile and semi-volatile compounds. These analyses are conducted using purge-and-trap systems and other specialized instrumentation. Accurate operation, routine maintenance, and effective troubleshooting of laboratory equipment are essential to ensure high-quality results. Strict adherence to Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Control (QC) procedures is required to maintain data integrity, reliability, and compliance with established laboratory standards.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time on an ad-hoc basis. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • One year as a Chemist 1 (Commonwealth job title or equivalent Federal Government job title, as determined by the Office of Administration); or
  • One year of professional chemical analytical experience, and a bachelor's degree that includes 30 credits in chemistry or biochemistry; or
  • A graduate degree in chemistry.
  • Applicants will be considered to have met the educational requirements once they are within 3 months of graduating with a qualifying degree.

  • You must possess and maintain a REAL ID or passport for this position. Proof of possession will be needed at the time of a conditional offer of employment.
