Job Description Summary:The Center for Advancing Science and Technology (CAST) fuels innovation across physical sciences, engineering, education, and policy to advance the nation's future prosperity and resilience. Our work prepares and supports the U.S. workforce to strengthen American competitiveness and security.

Under immediate direction, performs a variety of tasks that focus on providing learning opportunities and exposure to a wide range of activities. Duties may range from special projects directed toward particular objectives or duties typical of the organization that supplement existing department operations. May participate in research efforts including collection, assembly, and tabulation of data.

This job is intended for college students with an interest in science, engineering, medicine, or business operations to increase their knowledge and obtain on the job training and experience. Under direct supervision or clearly defined procedures, performs a variety of clerical and research duties and accomplishes routine tasks. Job Description:

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  • Performs administrative tasks such as word processing, copying, faxing, filing, answering and screening calls, and compiling and coordinating mailings. Creates, maintains, and updates records, databases, and files.

  • Assists with preparations for meetings, including compiling agenda books and briefing materials and providing administrative support for meetings. Registers attendees.

  • Performs subject-oriented literature searches. Gathers references. May participate in other research efforts including collection, assembly, and tabulation of data and summarizing literature. May assist in analyzing basic research results.

  • Proofreads and copyedits documents.

  • Attends meetings, training classes, and workshops.

  • Undertakes one or more short-term projects designed to assist with or to enhance ongoing study projects.

  • May participate in updating unit web pages and other communications/media activities.

NONESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES

  • Related duties and special projects as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Ability to solve problems with supervisory consultation or by following procedures. Ability to prioritize work and the flexibility to change directions as the job dictates. Ability to work successfully in a team environment. Ability to develop relationships with co-workers and employees in other National Academies' departments through effective communication. Good written, verbal, and interpersonal skills with an ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent knowledge. Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree college or university program.

Minimum Experience: None.

Physical Capabilities: Ability to work at a computer for extended periods of time.

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: None.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Reports to manager/supervisor. Supervisor is available to organize work, set objectives, and to assist in problem resolution.

Compensation: The compensation for this position is $18.50 per hour, plus potential overtime.

Work Environment:Hybrid Office/Telecommute environment, expected onsite percentage 60%, with occasional travel between National Academies' facilities and to off-site meeting/sponsor locations.
