Position Highlights

Manage, conduct, and support firefighter research in collaboration with FFCCS PIs and co-PIs. Coordinate firefighter study (800 firefighters) and collaborate with firefighter liaisons oversee equipment use, offer expert research design advice, generate quality data, ensure regulation compliance, and manage lab operations. This position will be coordinating with internal and external stakeholders for firefighter research, including wildland conservancy, wildland firefighters, wildland firefighter departments, research partners at several different universities and the internal study team.

This position offers a hybrid work arrangement, combining on-site work at the University of Arizona campus with remote work flexibility.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with firefighter liaisons and university staff, at U of A and other sites, to ensure enrollment and follow-up procedures run smoothly, with appropriate scientific attention to sample collection and processing during visits.
  • Manage students and staff in research and enrollment roles to support study operations.
  • Oversee and lead the design and construction of surveys, research instruments, and protocols for interventions, in collaboration with the data coordinating center of the FFCCS, firefighter partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Develop study design protocols for interventions using a community-engaged approach, systematically evaluating requests from community stakeholders, aligning with the interests of the Principal Investigators, and incorporating extensive literature reviews to assess intervention validity, implementation strategies, and protocols for measuring outcomes and exposures.
  • Prepare report back materials, newsletters, and educational materials for firefighters, in addition to organizing calls to ensure a community-engaged research pipeline for the firefighters.
  • Develop and implement SOPs for interventions, applying deep knowledge of exposure and outcome assessment, clinical trial standards and documentation, and conducting literature reviews while balancing internal and external stakeholder needs.
  • Organize and assign the analysis of data and preparation of manuscripts, and conference presentations, with data managers, data analysts, and biostatisticians.
  • Present at conferences, lead scientific manuscript development, and contribute to drafting study design.
  • Develop other materials related to wildland firefighting and other firefighting needs, with possible opportunities related to legislation, policy, and education to firefighters and PI team.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of community engaged research, epidemiological study design, RCTs, IRB protocols and requirements, industrial hygiene, and unique challenges faced by firefighters.

  • PhD in Environmental health sciences with experience/credentials in industrial hygiene.
  • Minimum 8 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
