Overview

Orrick currently has an excellent opportunity for a Systems Engineer in our Global Operations & Innovation Center in Wheeling, WV.


Responsibilities

As a Systems Engineer, you will provide assistance, technical support and administration in the areas of servers, virtualization, storage, connectivity and applications. This position will work in the Systems area of the Network Operations group.

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:

  • Gauge the effectiveness and efficiency of existing systems; develop and implement strategies for improving or further leveraging these systems.
  • Propose and create system design models, specifications, diagrams, and charts to provide direction to system programmer and development teams.
  • Design and perform server and security audits, system backup procedures, and other recovery processes in accordance with the company's disaster recovery and business continuity strategies.
  • Integrate servers, including database, e-mail, print, and backup servers and their associated software into enterprise systems.
  • Ensure system connectivity of all servers, shared software, groupware, and other applications.
  • Create and maintain documentation as it relates to system configuration, mapping, processes, and service records.
  • Ensure compatibility and interoperability of in-house computing systems.
  • Coordinate and perform in-depth tests, including end-user reviews, for modified and new systems.
  • Monitor and test system performance; prepare and deliver system performance statistics and reports.
  • Provide orientation and training to end users for all modified and new systems.
  • Perform installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of servers, storage, applications and peripheral devices.
  • Manage physical and virtual servers and their associated operating systems, patches and software.
  • Ensure system connectivity of all servers, shared software, groupware, and other applications.
  • Create and maintain documentation as it relates to system configuration, mapping, processes, and service records.
  • Serve as an escalation point for server, storage and application issues; provide timely response to escalations.
  • Plan and implement server upgrades, maintenance fixes, and vendor-supplied patches.
  • Work with other Network and Systems Engineers to recommend and execute modifications to server environment in order to improve efficiency, reliability, and performance.
  • Collaborate with other engineers to assess near and long-term server/storage capacity needs.
  • Collaborate with engineering staff to ensure smooth and reliable operation of software and systems for fulfilling business objectives and processes.
  • Work with team members, decision makers, and stakeholders to define business requirements and systems goals, and to identify and resolve business systems issues.
  • Work as part of a team on the design and review of new server systems, applications, and hardware.
  • Participate in key process improvements as they relate to the client/server environment.
  • Collaborate with System and Network Engineering and other application owners to ensure availability, reliability, and scalability of corporate servers to meet business demands.
  • Conduct research on servers services, protocols, and standards to remain abreast of developments in the industry.

Qualifications

  • Five plus years experience in the areas of System Engineering such as System/Server/Storage Administration (servers, SANs, virtualization, AD, Exchange)
  • Proficiency with Windows Server server operating systems and utilities is required.
  • Knowledge of virtualization including VMWare is required.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Active Directory and Exchange.
  • Experience with WINS, DNS and DHCP in a corporate environment is required.
  • Skills with both HP and Dell servers and storage.
  • Skill managing EMC and NetApp SANs is preferred.
  • Skill with Web Servers (IIS) and FTP servers is necessary.
  • Some experience with UNIX/Linux is a plus.
  • General proficiency with Windows desktop OS and MS Office suite of products is required.
  • Knowledge of server monitoring and troubleshooting tools.

Additional Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from recognized college or university and/or five plus years related experience and/or training.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, and technical documentation.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present and communicate information to management and other Firm personnel.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization and/or specific direction exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Must be able to provide clear leadership and guidance to Network Operations staff and management with respect to implementing, managing, and supporting the systems for which you are responsible.
  • This position requires the ability to adapt to flexible work hours to meet the needs of the Firm.

Compensation and Benefits

The expected salary range for this position is between $66,000.00 and $78,000.00.

Orrick is committed to providing a comprehensive, competitive, and thoughtful total compensation package to our attorneys and staff, wherever they work. This compensation and benefits information is based on the Orrick's estimate as of the date of publication and may be modified in the future. The level of pay within the range will depend on a variety of job-related factors that may include, but not limited to, qualifications, relevant experience or education, particular skills or expertise, geography. Other compensation may include an annual discretionary merit bonus, which would be determined by Firm and individual performance.
