Location: Cleveland, OH

Cleveland-Cliffs is hiring an Environmental Manager based in the Cleveland office to oversee the environmental operations program for select steel sites. This role ensures compliance with environmental laws and regulations, drives standardization on efficiency, manages environmental risks, and promotes best practices. This person will drive improvements in line with applicable local, state, and federal requirements, as well as Cliffs' policies and procedures for superior environmental performance.

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Regular communication/collaboration with assigned operations to ensure superior environmental compliance, and to support business objectives

  • Contribute to developing plans for continuous improvement in environmental performance for assigned operations

  • Ensure systemic implementation of rigorous root cause analyses, corrective/preventive actions, and sharing of best practices to improve performance and reduce risks

  • Assess performance issues and risks, and develop plans to address those risks

  • Benchmark operational performance and share best practices

  • Drive a superior environmental compliance program through leading by example, coaching, mentoring, and engaging people at all levels of the organization; assist in the development of site environmental leaders

  • Coordinate communication and response activities to environmental regulatory authorities and internal stakeholders when the company is required to provide such communications

  • Coordinate environmental performance metric reporting for assigned operations, including the development of leading and lagging indicators to track performance

  • Coordinate with assigned operations to ensure timely/accurate collection and issuance of periodic reports

  • Lead and assist operating sites in the consistent implementation of corporate policies and programs

  • Support the company's compliance audit program through environmental audits/risk assessments

  • Build and enhance tools and systems needed for corporate initiatives

  • Cooperate with other corporate Environmental Affairs staff to support information requests, reporting, and program improvements, and proper reporting of potential environmental risks and liabilities

  • Coordinate with Regulatory & Permitting team on applicable emerging regulations to ensure the business is protected from emerging new regulatory risks

  • Coordinate with sites and Regulatory & Permitting team to prepare/review and submit applicable environmental permits, plans, and notifications, and assist with/review agency submittals

  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of Environmental management experience in a manufacturing environment

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental engineering, Chemical Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, or equivalent work experience

  • Demonstrated a high level of interpersonal skills to work effectively with site environmental and operational leadership

  • Demonstrated leadership skills

  • Ability to work independently, prioritize work, and handle multiple projects

  • Excellent written and verbal skills

  • Current working knowledge of various State and Federal Environmental Laws and regulations applicable to operations

  • Familiarity with CAA, CWA, TSCA, and RCRA regulations

  • Familiarity with reading and interpreting laboratory analytical reports is required to support all regulatory requirements for all media (air, water, and waste)

  • Proficient in MS Office products

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10-15 years implementation and management of Environmental Management Systems and Programs within the steel, scrap metal processing, and recycling, or similar heavy industry

  • Experience maintaining ISO Certified Management Systems (ISO9000, ISO14001, etc.) in heavy manufacturing environment

  • Extensive working knowledge of both Federal and State environmental laws and regulations related to steel, scrap metal processing, and recycling, or similar heavy industry

  • Familiarity with process industry operations

The salary range for this role is $105,000 - $140,000. An employee's pay within the salary range will be based on numerous factors, including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, geographic location, and business or organizational needs.
