The department of Facilities Management at West Virginia University is currently accepting applications for an Electrician II at the Health Sciences Center facilities.

About the Opportunity:

Under the direction of the Electrical Manager and/or Lead, this position will provide maintenance troubleshooting, repair, and installation of various types of Electrical equipment. Performs various construction and repair methods as required to maintain buildings and equipment at Health Sciences Center facilities.

What You'll Do:

  • Working from blueprints and specifications and in conjunction with supervisor, architects, engineers, factory representatives, installs and maintains equipment unique to each electrical project.
  • Provides electrical power for signal circuits and equipment such as fire alarms, telecom, computers, P.A. systems, TV, satellite, audio visual, etc.
  • Installations or provisions for equipment and controls of HVAC equipment, pumps, compressors etc.

  • Installs, maintains, repairs, inspects, electrical conduit, tubing, surface raceways and accessories, buss ducts, and cable trays of all types, sizes, and styles.

  • Builds, installs, troubleshoots, maintains, and/or repairs motors, motor controls, motor control centers, and interfaces with all necessary external equipment such as fire alarms, computers, safety devices, mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, programmable and digital controls or equipment.
  • Installs, operates, inspects and repairs high voltage distribution equipment inside and outside the building and makes cable splices in underground applications, manholes, vaults, tunnels, and distribution equipment. Installs, maintains, operates, and repairs emergency power systems such as generators, transfer switches, battery backup (UPS) systems, emergency lighting, etc.
  • Performs functional and operational testing using electronic test equipment and meters. Operates equipment to include motorized and hydraulic benders, wire pulling winches, core drills, hydraulic punching tools, portable and stationary saws and drills, vacuum and pressure operated systems. Utilizes truck-mounted lift bucket.
  • Set-up systems, develop layouts, develop program and purchase components for fire alarm protection to support renovation projects in laboratories, large office complexes, access areas and classrooms in compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Install, fabricate or modify fire protection equipment, wiring and devices working from blueprints, schematics and specifications and in conjunction with architects engineers, and/or factory representatives unique to each project.
  • Install and modify building equipment utilizing electronic controls.
  • Design, fabricate, install, and modify instrumentation equipment and electronic controls to support research projects and /or as teaching aids.
  • Develop documentation and necessary record keeping as required by regulating authorities in regards to fire and life safety. Install, upload, trouble shoot and modify computer support program for associated fire protection software within the Health Sciences Facility.
  • Functions as primary responder when an alert for potential fire or smoke alarm danger is indicated.
  • Operate, test and maintain all associated fire protection, equipment, computer programming and technical documentation. Perform preventative maintenance to all fire protection devices associated with fire alarm systems within the facility.
  • Maintain, document and initiate electronic and/or mechanical repairs of all classes of electronic equipment which will include modifications and calibrations as necessary.
  • Performs preventative maintenance, functional and operational testing using electronic test equipment and meters.
  • Maintain and repair and modify instrumentation equipment and electronic controls to support research projects and /or as teaching aids.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance and document necessary record keeping as required by regulating authorities in regards to fire and life safety.
  • When on the job site individual is expected to work craft, coordinate with assigned non-craft individuals and complete task without close supervision utilizing blueprints and technical expertise.

    Pay Grade: 14

    Hours: 7am - 3pm

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • A minimum of two (2) years experience in one of the following:
    • 2 years of electrical experience
    • Completion of an associate degree as an electrical technician
    • Completion of a 2 year accredited vocational electrical program
  • Any equivalent combination of related education and/or experience will be considered

  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Electrical applications and systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of local, state, and federal building codes
  • Demonstrated ability to read blueprints and electrical schematics.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform mathematical computations.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in inclement weather conditions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with people in a stressful environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to have excellent eye to hand coordination.
  • Demonstrated ability to hear and interpret sounds in the work area and verbal instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in hot or cold areas such as steam tunnels and exterior tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to use mechanical and electrical troubleshooting techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate well utilizing both written and oral instructions.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform all assigned related tasks.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of technical terms related to electrical/mechanical equipment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with multi-craft personnel.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Safety/PPE equipment and processes.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain proper attendance and punctuality standards.
  • Ability to use diagnostic test equipment and tools.

Physical Effort:

  • Stooping, walking, standing, crouching in very confined areas
  • Climbing ladders, scaffolds, mechanical lifts and platforms at various heights and levels
  • Lifting and carrying over 50 pounds

Requirements
  • Valid WV state electrical license (journeyman) preferred.
