Compensation

At S&C, we are dedicated to providing competitive and equitable compensation for all our team members, and we are committed to transparency in our pay practices. The estimated annual base salary range for this position is $87758 - $116285.18. Individual pay within this salary range is determined by several compensable factors, including performance, knowledge, job-related skills and experience, and relevant education or training. This role is also eligible for S&C's annual incentive plan (AIP), subject to eligibility criteria.

Join Our Team as a Controls Engineer!

The Polymer Products operations at S&C is a world leader for manufacturing medium voltage epoxy insulation products. The engineering team at Polymer Products supports operations team to achieve the yield goals through process controls, mold designs, and trainings; seeks continuous improvement with manufacturing processes, mold designs, tools, and equipment through improvement and capital projects; addresses and resolves quality concerns observed with manufactured products through problem-solving activities; and supports new product/process development through design, procurement, installation, and startup.

The candidate considered for this position will work on-site at S&C Headquarters in Chicago, Illinois supporting the Polymer Products process engineering team and report to the Manager-Process Engineering.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Improve operational efficiency and reliability through continuous improvement of processes equipment and safety controls
  • Develop, modify, and troubleshoot PLC programs using RSLogix 500, RSLogix 5000, and Studio 5000 Logix Designer.
  • Design and implement HMI applications (Wonderware/AVEVA preferred) for machine control and operator interfaces.
  • Generate clear documentation including control logic descriptions, functional specifications, test plans, standard operating procedures, electrical drawings, and training manuals.
  • Support the installation, startup, and commissioning of polymer molding machinery, including integration of sensors, actuators, drives, and auxiliary equipment.
  • Participate in control system design including I/O selection, control panel layouts, wiring schematics, and system architecture.
  • Diagnose and resolve automation, instrumentation, and controls-related issues during production or machine trials.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, electrical codes, and safety practices.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, process engineers and maintenance technicians to troubleshoot process equipment issues, improve machine reliability and optimize molding and /or plating processes.
  • Occasionally, visit equipment suppliers to test equipment during Factory Acceptance Testing.

What you'll Need To Succeed:

Required

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (BSEE) or equivalent engineering discipline.
  • 2-6 years of experience as a Controls Engineer, Automation Engineer, or similar role.
  • Hands-on experience with Allen-Bradley / Rockwell Automation platforms including:
    • RSLogix 500
    • Studio 5000 / Logix Designer
    • ControlLogix, CompactLogix, MicroLogix PLC families
  • Experience developing and deploying Wonderware (AVEVA) HMI/SCADA applications.
  • Strong understanding of industrial networking (EtherNet/IP), sensors, PID loops, and motor control (VFDs, servos).
  • Ability to read and create electrical schematics and control panel drawings.
  • Experience supporting machine installation and commissioning activities in a manufacturing environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with plating, polymer molding, thermoforming, extrusion, packaging, or similar process machinery.
  • Familiarity with NFPA 70/79, UL508A, and general industrial electrical standards.
  • Working knowledge of data collection systems, MES, or SCADA integration.
  • Understanding of continuous improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma, etc.).

  • Handling: Occasional handling of parts or tools, and hazardous and non-hazardous materials.

  • Continuously working indoors/outdoors in an air-conditioned office/manufacturing-based environment.
  • Infrequently exposed to fumes/vapors/dust/gases/odors/mist/toxic chemicals/radiation/vibration/grease/oils/radiation/lasers/other etc.
  • Occasionally exposed to low/moderate/high noise levels including machinery/vehicles/forklifts/office equipment/office traffic etc.
  • Occasionally working around energized equipment with the risk of electrocution/scalding/burns/other etc.
  • Infrequently exposed to wet humid/outdoor weather/extreme cold (non-weather)/extreme heat (non-weather) conditions/other etc.
  • Infrequently working with machinery with moving parts/vehicles/forklifts/heavy machinery/sharp objects/other etc.
