Job Summary

Design and maintain cathodic protection on distribution and transmission pipelines. Monitors and conducts specialized corrosion tests, troubleshoots, designs, and recommends corrective actions to maintain cathodic protection that ensures compliance with CNP Operations manual, state, and federal codes.

Essential Functions

  • Plans, coordinates, directs, and participates in the installation of corrosion protection equipment, such as rectifiers and anodes, and recoating of exposed pipes at bridge crossings or any other places where our system is, by design, subject to atmospheric corrosion.
  • Ensures compliance with all CNP Operations manual policies, State and D.O.T. Regulations. Assists in TRCC
  • audits and responds to questions concerning cathodic protection.
  • Conducts electrical potential and current tests of test point locations to determine levels of cathodic protection. Tests and maintain records of rectifiers and resistance bonds.
  • Based upon review and analysis of routine electrical test results, locates electrical isolation and continuity problems, determines corrective action, and submits work orders to appropriate personnel for remedial action.
  • Maintains field records of cathodic ally protected distribution system, submits corrections, additions, and deletions for input into the corrosion computer program, and prepares and updates cathodic protection maps.
  • Designs cathodic protection systems for new and existing mains to reduce system maintenance costs and to comply with government regulations.
  • Makes preliminary recommendations for main replacement or cathodic protection, due to corrosion, based on field inspections, pipe-to-soil potentials, soil resistively, leak history and other related information to ensure safety and compliance with government regulations.
  • Performs other Corrosion/Leak Detection activities as apparent or assigned.
  • Must be willing to successfully complete additional training as needed.

Education Description

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent knowledge of English, mathematics (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and percentages), punctuation, grammar, and spelling.


Working knowledge of a personal computer is preferred.

Experience

  • Requires at least five (5) years' experience working in the utility gas industry.
  • Requires a valid state issued driver's license.

Physical Requirements

  • Able to operate a motor vehicle including ability to enter and exit the vehicle unassisted.
  • Able to meet all the physical demands of this position, including lifting and carrying up to ninety pounds, and walking for up to 8 hours, bending, and climbing.
  • Able to walk proposed pipeline route and move swiftly, if needed.
  • Able to bend at knees multiple times throughout the day.

Working Conditions

  • Able to work with moderate daily pressure to meet deadlines.
  • Able to wear personal protection safety equipment, such as respirator, safety glasses, hard hat, gloves,
  • protective footwear, and ear plugs, occasionally.
  • Able to work overtime (scheduled and/or unscheduled, nights and/or weekends) occasionally, as needed.

  • Able to travel for installations, inspections and/or investigations in field locations, attend, or conduct.
