Description

Become part of an inclusive organization with over 40,000 teammates, whose mission is to improve the health and well-being of the unique communities we serve.

Position Overview

The Department of Neurology at UNC Hospitals is seeking a full-time Comprehensive Neurologist (Academic) with a strong interest in post-acute neurology care, resident education, and transitional care management. This position is designed to enhance continuity of care for patients following hospital discharge and plays a critical role in bridging inpatient and ambulatory neurology care. This is a teaching-intensive role with a significant focus on supervising resident clinics dedicated to post-hospital follow-up. The ideal candidate will be comfortable managing patients newly diagnosed during an inpatient admission and establishing thoughtful, longitudinal care plans in the ambulatory setting. While the role includes elements of general neurology, it is not a traditional high-volume headache-focused practice.

Clinical Care

  • Provide outpatient neurological care with a primary emphasis on patients recently discharged from the hospital, including those newly diagnosed with neurologic conditions.
  • Establish, implement, and monitor ambulatory care plans focused on stabilization, transition, and coordination with primary care and subspecialty services as appropriate.
  • Participate in a developing teleneurology program, including post-discharge follow-up visits for select patients who may not be seen in resident clinics.
  • Provide general neurology care as part of a comprehensive academic practice, with case mix weighted toward post-acute and transitional neurology rather than subspecialty headache care.
  • Determine appropriate long-term disposition of patients (continued general neurology follow-up, subspecialty referral, or transition back to primary care).

Teaching & Supervision

  • Staff resident continuity clinics, with dedicated clinic slots for post-hospital discharge patients.
  • Provide direct supervision, teaching, and mentorship to neurology residents in the ambulatory setting.
  • Contribute to the department's educational mission through bedside teaching, case discussions, and informal mentorship.
  • Participate in educational conferences and teaching activities as aligned with faculty role and interests.

Program Development & Collaboration

  • Collaborate with inpatient neurology teams to support timely and effective post-discharge follow-up.
  • Partner with primary care physicians, subspecialists, and care coordination teams to ensure smooth transitions of care.
  • Contribute to the growth and refinement of post-acute and teleneurology clinical pathways.

Practice Location & Schedule

  • Primary clinical location: UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill
  • Potential for one day per week in Raleigh as part of teleneurology or ambulatory coverage (structure to be finalized)
  • Typical schedule anticipates 3-4 days per week in Chapel Hill, with flexibility as programs evolve

Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree
  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Neurology
  • Eligible for medical licensure in North Carolina
  • Strong interest in resident education and academic practice
  • Experience or interest in post-acute care, care transitions, or ambulatory management of newly diagnosed neurologic conditions preferred
  • Comfort working in a collaborative, multidisciplinary academic environment

Academic Appointment & Compensation

  • Academic appointment commensurate with experience
  • Competitive compensation and benefits package consistent with academic medicine
  • Opportunities for professional growth within a nationally recognized academic neurology program
