The Rutgers Division of Intercollegiate Athletics sponsors 24 intercollegiate sports, comprised of 14 women's and 10 men's programs, that compete at the Division I level. The Scarlet Knights are members of the prestigious Big Ten Conference, the nation's premier academic and athletic conference, after officially joining the league on July 1, 2014. Known as "The Birthplace of College Football, Rutgers hosted Princeton on Nov. 6, 1869 in the first intercollegiate football game, with RU earning a 6-4 victory.
Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Spirit Program Assistant Coach for the Athletics Marketing and Communication department. The primary purpose of the Assistant Coach, Spirit Program will be the technical training of the mascot team and assisting with game performances, based on experience, the individuals will be assigned various duties to support the spirit program.
Among the key duties of this position are the following:

  • Assists the head coach with practice activity coordination, game management, and other spirit program appearances at intercollegiate athletic events and other events as necessary.
  • Assists Head Coach in providing athletic training to students.
  • Teaches game day performance and skills.
  • Trains and prepare student athletes, both physically and mentally, for game performances.
  • Monitors and evaluates the performance of student athletes and provide appropriate feedback.
  • Builds positive and achievement oriented team environment.
  • Attends home football games, men's and women's basketball games, wrestling matches, and other sporting, campus, and community events as assigned.
  • Assists in conducting alumni events, summer camps, promotional events and fund-raising programs as assigned.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, and organized athletic facility.
  • Ensures that athletic equipment and tools are in good and safe working condition.
  • Adheres to rules and policies established by athletic department.
  • Choreographs and instructs mascot performances.
  • Videos teams at games and events.
  • Schedules - in writing - daily practice session.
  • Organizes all facets of game performances.
  • Attends Rutgers sporting events other than football, men's basketball, women's basketball, and wrestling.
  • Travels to post-season tournaments.
  • Recruits qualified students.
  • Works with administration to make travel arrangements for team including transportation, food, and lodging.
  • Assists Head Coach with mascot camp and obtaining social media content as needed.

FLSA Nonexempt
Salary Details $15.92 - $18.00/hourly

Minimum Education and Experience

  • High School diploma or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.


Certifications/Licenses


  • AACCA certified.

  • CPR certified.
  • A valid driver's license would be required for this position.

  • Ability to be passionate and enthusiastic, assertive to do what is needed, and maintain composure/remain cool and calm under pressure.
  • Willingness to work hard with a high level of energy and commitment to be the best.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Prior coaching experience or background in cheer/dance.
  • Associate's or bachelor's degree.
