Description

The Community Center Custodian is an hourly position to assist in the operations of the Goleta Community Center. Under direct supervision of the Recreation Supervisor, the Custodian will provide excellent customer service while performing a variety of general custodial and routine building maintenance.

Anticipated hours 5-15 hours per week (may not exceed 999 hours in a July-June Fiscal Year). Must be available to work weekends and weeknights and occasional on-call work, depending on business needs. This is an unclassified position that does not receive fringe benefits, except as may be required by law.


Note: This is a continuous recruitment and new applications will be screened on a regular basis.

Examples of Duties

  1. Represent the City of Goleta by providing excellent customer service to residents and visitors of the Community Center.
  2. Perform basic custodial duties including, but not limited to mopping, emptying trash, dusting, and sweeping.
  3. Assist public with questions related to parks, recreation activities, and facility rentals.
  4. Assist with set-up and breakdown/cleaning of rooms for Community Center classes or events; open and close facility and pickleball courts as needed.
  5. Perform routine maintenance on buildings, grounds and equipment.
  6. Inspect buildings, grounds, and equipment for safety concerns and maintenance needs. Report concerns and major repair needs to supervisor.
  7. Complete reports on attendance, maintenance and other reports as requested.
  8. Assist in security monitoring of the Community Center and grounds.
  9. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Typical Qualifications

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge of :
  • Basic custodial and maintenance methods.
  • Use of equipment such as electric mops, floor polishers, and landscaping equipment.
Ability to :
  • Communicate effectively with staff and members of the public.
  • Safely operate a variety of custodial and maintenance equipment.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with facility user groups, staff, and management.
  • Provide exemplary customer service skills.
  • Read and write at the level required for successful job performance.
  • Work independently and take initiative in addressing the needs of the facility.
  • Take responsibility and exercise good judgment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be physically able to lift heavy items up to 50 pounds above and below shoulder height, perform continuous standing walking, reaching, and bending. Work in some positions may require various types of physical exertion, such as: bending, stooping, and lifting; carrying and moving heavy objects such as supplies or equipment, environment may be subject to loud noises, varying temperatures, exposure to noise, dust, fumes, air contaminants, grease, and cleaning agents.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of training and experience which would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
