Director Enterprise Architecture

LOCATION: Greenwood Village, CO - Hybrid

Annual Compensation: $160,000 - $190,000.00 DOE

This position is bonus eligible

We are seeking an accomplished Director of Enterprise Architecture to lead and evolve our architecture practice with a sharp focus on purpose-built, best-in-class infrastructure and seamless application integration across the enterprise. This is a senior leadership role that sits at the intersection of technology strategy, operational excellence, and cross-functional innovation.

At the heart of everything this role delivers is a core design philosophy we call Simple, Scalable, Secure - or S3. Every architecture decision, standard, and pattern this team produces should be evaluated against these three lenses: Is it as simple as it can be? Can it grow without friction? Is security a built-in property, not an afterthought? This philosophy is not a checklist - it is the cultural standard by which architectural quality is measured across the organization.

This Director will serve as the executive chair of our established Technology & Enterprise Architecture Committee (TEAC), the governing body responsible for technological decisions, standards ratification, and architectural direction across the organization. Beyond governance, you will lead and scale a growing architecture team setting the standards by which all technology is designed, integrated, and scaled - while serving as a critical bridge between our Innovation and R&D functions and the production-grade infrastructure and integration patterns that bring ideas to life at enterprise scale.

If you are energized by building resilient, deeply integrated technology ecosystems, championing simplicity at scale, and turning innovation into durable capability - this role is for you.

Responsibilities:

  • Serve as the chair and managing leader of the Technology & Enterprise Architecture Committee (TEAC), leading regular governance sessions, driving consensus, and ensuring architectural decisions align to enterprise strategy.
  • Evolve the TEAC charter, operating model, and decision-making frameworks to keep pace with the organization's growth and technology ambitions.
  • Embed the Simple, Scalable, Secure (S3) design philosophy as the evaluative standard within all TEAC review processes - ensuring it is applied consistently across infrastructure, integration, and application decisions.
  • Oversee architecture review processes for all major technology initiatives - ensuring new solutions meet infrastructure, integration, security, and standards requirements before investment is committed.
  • Establish and maintain a technology classification framework (emerging, current, twilight, sunset) to guide portfolio rationalization and vendor management decisions.
  • Publish and govern enterprise architecture principles, guardrails, and reference architectures as authoritative standards - with S3 compliance as a non-negotiable baseline for all approved patterns.

Purpose-Built Infrastructure Architecture

  • Define and own the enterprise infrastructure architecture strategy - ensuring all compute, network, storage, cloud, and hybrid environments are intentionally designed for performance, resilience, security, and cost efficiency through the lens of Simple, Scalable, Secure.
  • Champion a 'purpose-built' philosophy: infrastructure is designed to match specific workload requirements - not defaulted to generic solutions - while maintaining simplicity of operation, the ability to scale without re-architecture, and security as a foundational property.
  • Lead the evaluation and adoption of modern infrastructure patterns including cloud-native architectures (IaaS/PaaS/SaaS), containerization (Kubernetes), infrastructure-as-code, and private/hybrid cloud strategies - always with an eye toward reducing unnecessary complexity.
  • Drive infrastructure architecture reviews for major platform investments, migrations, and modernization initiatives - from data centers to cloud-native transformations.
  • Partner with infrastructure, security, and operations teams to ensure designs are operationally simple to manage, horizontally scalable, and secure by default - not by exception.
  • Establish infrastructure architecture standards covering networking, identity and access, compute tiering, storage strategy, and observability platforms - designed for clarity and reuse across teams.

Application Integration Architecture

  • Own the enterprise integration architecture strategy - defining how applications, platforms, data systems, and third-party services connect, communicate, and exchange data with simplicity, scalability, and security as non-negotiable design properties.
  • Develop and govern a comprehensive integration framework covering API design standards, event-driven architecture patterns, message queuing, ESB/iPaaS usage, and real-time vs. batch integration strategies - built to be understood, extended, and secured by any team.
  • Evaluate and rationalize the integration platform landscape - recommending consolidation or adoption of tools (e.g., MuleSoft, Azure Integration Services, Kafka, Boomi) based on total cost, strategic fit, and alignment to S3 principles.
  • Partner with application, data, and infrastructure teams to ensure integration architectures are loosely coupled, resilient, observable, and designed to scale horizontally without accumulating complexity.
  • Establish API governance practices: lifecycle management, versioning standards, security policies, and developer experience guidelines - making secure, scalable integration the path of least resistance for engineering teams.
  • Drive elimination of point-to-point integrations and legacy coupling, replacing them with reusable, well-documented integration patterns that are simpler to operate, easier to scale, and safer to expose.

Team Leadership & Talent Development

  • Lead, grow, and inspire a team of enterprise, solution, infrastructure, and integration architects - setting a high bar for technical excellence grounded in the Simple, Scalable, Secure design philosophy.
  • Cultivate a team culture where S3 is a shared language - where architects challenge each other to reduce unnecessary complexity, design for growth from day one, and never treat security as a bolt-on concern.
  • Build an environment grounded in curiosity, collaboration, and continuous learning, where architects are empowered to influence decisions at every level of the organization.
  • Define career pathways, provide active coaching and mentorship, and manage performance in a way that retains and develops top architectural talent.
  • Scale team structure as the organization evolves - building communities of practice and domain-specific centers of excellence where appropriate.

Innovation & R&D Partnership

  • Serve as the primary architecture partner for Innovation and R&D teams - translating experimental ideas and proofs-of-concept into infrastructure and integration architectures that are simple enough to evolve, scalable enough to survive growth, and secure enough to deploy with confidence.
  • Co-develop architectural sandbox environments and S3-aligned reference patterns that give innovation teams the freedom to test and validate ideas without creating downstream technical risk.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and architectural paradigms relevant to R&D priorities - including AI/ML infrastructure, real-time data streaming, edge computing, and agentic system patterns - filtering them through the S3 lens before recommending adoption.
  • Bridge the transition from validated innovation to production delivery - ensuring that what works in the lab can be deployed reliably, integrated cleanly, and scaled confidently within S3 guardrails.

Executive Communication & Strategic Influence

  • Present infrastructure and integration architecture strategy, roadmaps, and investment recommendations to executive leadership, the VP IT Digital Transformation, and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Translate complex architectural concepts into clear business narratives - articulating trade-offs, risks, and long-term value in terms that resonate with both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Act as a thought leader internally and externally, contributing to architecture education, vendor relationship management, and industry engagement.

Qualifications:
Education & Industry Experience

  • 12+ years of progressive architecture experience, with at least 4-5 years in a people management or architecture leadership capacity.
  • Deep, hands-on expertise in enterprise infrastructure architecture - including cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP), hybrid cloud, network architecture, and infrastructure-as-code practices.
  • Proven expertise in enterprise application integration - including API design and governance, event-driven architecture, iPaaS/ESB platforms, and modern integration patterns.
  • A strong personal design philosophy that aligns with Simple, Scalable, Secure - with the ability to articulate and defend architectural decisions through those lenses in reviews, forums, and executive settings.
  • Demonstrated experience chairing or operating within a formal architecture governance body (Architecture Review Board, Technology Committee, or equivalent).
  • Track record of building and leading high-performing architecture teams, including hiring, growing, and retaining senior technical talent.
  • Experience partnering with innovation, product, or R&D functions to translate concepts into scalable, production-grade infrastructure and integration solutions.
