The Welding Intern supports the fabrication and welding team by assisting with basic welding, preparation, and finishing tasks while learning safe and effective welding practices. This role is designed to provide hands-on experience under close supervision and to build foundational skills in a manufacturing environment.

Under the guidance of a supervisor or experienced welder, the Welding Intern will:

  • Follow all safety procedures and shop rules at all times.

  • Assist with weld preparation, basic fabrication, welding, and weld finishing operations.

  • Learn to weld on flat, curved, and vertical surfaces.

  • Learn how to set up welding machines

  • Practice welding in various positions, including overhead, as skill level develops.

  • Make minor adjustments to welding equipment when directed.

  • Assist in straightening bent or warped metal using basic tools (e.g., hammering).

  • Sort, mark, and tag finished work for identification.

  • Measure and compare workpieces to templates or straight edges to check accuracy.

  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, tools, and equipment.

  • Perform other routine shop duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Skills

To be successful in this internship, the individual should demonstrate:

  • Basic ability to read a tape measure and use simple measuring tools.

  • Willingness to work with hands in a mechanical or industrial setting.

  • Strong interest in learning welding and fabrication skills.

  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions from supervisors.

  • Basic problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

  • Ability to learn to read blueprints and manufacturing orders.

Education & Experience

  • Enrollment in or completion of a welding or technical training program highly preferred.

  • Prior shop, mechanical, or hands-on experience is a plus, but not mandatory.

  • Basic math skills (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).

Physical Demands / Work Environment

This position involves work in a manufacturing environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

  • Ability to stand and move on concrete floors for extended periods (8-12 hours).

  • Frequent bending, reaching, gripping, kneeling, twisting, and working overhead.

  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with assistance as needed.

  • Ability to help maneuver large parts and assemblies using safe lifting techniques.

  • Ability to remain alert and focused while working around machinery and equipment.
