WHO WE ARE

The Audio-Visual (AV) Systems Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, supporting, and managing audio-visual systems and infrastructure. They analyze business requirements, design systems, and oversee system deployments and upgrades. They troubleshoot complex system issues, conduct performance tuning, and manage system backups and disaster recovery procedures. They collaborate with cross-functional teams, provide technical expertise, and contribute to system optimization, automation, and documentation efforts.

Information Services is the central IT department supporting all divisions of the Metropolitan Council. Our 140 team members provide technology, practices, and innovative solutions that enable the Council's core services.

How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:

The position will work as part of a team, designing, building, integrating, and managing audio-visual systems that meet the Council's technological needs. This position will solve problems at all levels and use its extensive knowledge to help set the future direction of systems at the Metropolitan Council. This position provides mentorship to staff and coordinates service outage and recovery efforts.


What you would do in this job

  • Automates infrastructure tasks to improve scalability, consistency, and operational efficiency.
  • Applies patches, updates, firmware, and system upgrades to audio-visual components.
  • Implements security controls, ensures compliance with security policies, and manages user access and permissions.
  • Coordinates service outages and recovery efforts, keeping the IS Service Desk and stakeholders informed.
  • Monitors and optimizes Audio Visual (AV) system performance, scalability, availability, and resource utilization.
  • Leads problem identification and resolution, including proactive problem management and root-cause analysis.
  • Installs, configures, and maintains audio-visual hardware, operating systems, and supporting components.
  • Collaborates with other IS divisions to ensure proper connectivity, accounts, and system integrations for AV systems.
  • Maintains documentation for configurations, procedures, and troubleshooting guidelines and supports capacity planning and forecasting.
  • Supports projects and initiatives, working with other IS teams to implement AV infrastructure solutions.
  • Will be the Met Council lead on internal digital signage, including user management, end user support, vendor support, new deployments, and other related digital signage tasks or issues.
  • Maintaining Public Address systems within Met Council facilities, including end-user support, vendor support, new deployments, and other related public address system tasks.
  • Will be able to work with multiple vendors on new or refreshed audio-visual systems in conference rooms. Including quotes, installations, and approval of installation systems.

What education and experience are required for this job (minimum qualifications)

Education/Experience:

Any of the following combinations of completed education (in computer science, information systems, or a related field) and experience (in data architecture, database technologies, data modeling, structured and unstructured data, and solid programming):

  • High school diploma/GED with seven (7) years of experience
  • Associate degree with five (5) years of experience
  • Bachelor's degree with two (2) years of experience
  • Master's degree with 0 years of experience

Desired Qualifications:
  • Professional industry certifications such as:
    • CTS (Certified Technology Specialist), CTS-I (Installation) or CTS-D (Design)
    • Crestron, Extron, Polycom, AMX, Biamp, Granicus, others
  • Understanding of networks and networking technologies, flow, and ability to troubleshoot (IP addressing, VLANs, switches)
  • Strong knowledge of audio, video, and lighting systems, including setup and troubleshooting.
  • Live streaming experience.
  • Experience working with:
    • General audio-visual troubleshooting
    • Projectors, displays, monitors
    • Microphones, mixers, DSPs, amplifiers, speakers
    • Video conferencing platforms (Zoom, MS Teams, Webex, others)
    • Control systems (Crestron, Extron, AMX
    • HDMI, SDI, VGA, DisplayPort, and other port technologies
    • Audio over IP and intermediate networking concepts
    • Familiarity with AV rack wiring, cable management, and installation standards
  • Ability to install, configure, and support AV equipment in:
    • Conference rooms
    • Council Chambers
    • Experience with preventive maintenance and equipment upgrades.
    • Ability to read and interpret technical diagrams, schematics, and floor plans.
  • Digital Signage Experience
    • Understanding of how digital signage works and flows
    • Ability to troubleshoot digital signage in a corporate environment
  • Customer Service & Communication
    • Professional and friendly demeanor when supporting end users
    • Ability to explain technical issues in simple terms
    • Strong communications skills with clients, event staff, and IT teams
    • Strong attention to detail, working in a team-oriented environment
  • Experience working with diverse populations of internal and external customers.
