Job Description

Johnson County Government's Department of Technology and Innovation is seeking a skilled and experienced Network Security Administrator to join our team.

This position is currently eligible to work in a hybrid work environment with both onsite and remote work. Residency within the Kansas City-Overland Park-Kansas City, MO-KS Combined Statistical Area, which generally includes the Kansas counties of Johnson, Wyandotte, Leavenworth, Miami, and Linn, and the Missouri counties of Jackson, Clay, Platte, Cass, and Ray, is required.

Key Responsibilities

    Helps architects lead projects and execute tasks in order to implement security policies; collaborates with other team members to troubleshoot issues; identifies resources needed and ensures tasks and projects are completed.
  • Coordinates with other staff on the design, implementation, operation, and maintenance of system and network security controls; recommends changes and enhancements as needed to fulfill security requirements.
  • Helps architects design in the development, testing, implementation, and maintenance of security software, systems and appliances; performs installation, maintenance and upgrades security for complex systems; examines effectiveness of existing security systems; generates reports and documents processes and procedures.
  • Analyzes and evaluates system generated security incident reports and information security notices issued by information system vendors, and other organizations; advises senior management on appropriate safeguards for adoption.
  • Researches, assists and directs deploying new technologies; manages transition to operational service; provides leadership on security projects which involve a wide range of issues including secure architectures, secure electronic data traffic, network security, platform and data security and privacy; reviews and tracks maintenance contract renewals.


Job Requirements

Special Knowledge and Skills Needed

  • Analytical skills, including the ability to research, interpret data, conceptualize data, analyze information, and write formal recommendations based on findings.
  • Experience with network and security management software.
  • Knowledge of appropriate computer operating systems and applications, windows environment, MS Office products.
  • Comprehensive understanding and substantive experience in network systems engineering, computing systems and software applications.
  • Experience using network analysis tools, scripting languages including UNIX command line utilities, software vulnerabilities, exploits and malware.

Required Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in information technology or relevant field*
  • Four (4) years' experience providing network and system security, administering security applications, programming and systems software and support or relevant experience.
  • Two (2) years' experience in information security principles including experience in information systems risk analysis and management.

*Experience may be substituted for education. Education may be substituted for experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Three (1) years' experience in project management.
  • Palo Alto Ecosystem Experience
  • Multi-Vendor 802.1x Experience

  • Written communication skills, including business writing, report writing, summarizing, and editing skills.
