Resident Assistants (RAs) act as a liaison between the Office of University Housing and the students who live within the residential community. RAs are responsible for facilitating an environment conducive to living and learning by way of role modeling, programmatic opportunities, maintenance referrals, as well as policy enforcement. RAs are also given training to learn what is necessary to perform duties and responsibilities effectively.
Also, an RA must be able to move through a three to six-story building via stairs and must be able to climb and descend stairs for duty rounds. An RA must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
The Summer RA position starts on May 9, 2026, and ends on August 6, 2026
. The time commitment will vary from week to week; however, on average the Summer RA works approximately 20 hours per week over the course of the summer term.
The compensation package includes a housing scholarship, stipend, and a Housing meal plan. The meal plan is provided to serve as a tool for Resident Assistants to increase community building with residents. Although the compensation does include residential space, University Housing reserves the right to assign roommates to staff based on the occupancy needs of University Housing.

| Primary Responsibilities |
Resident Assistants (RAs) act as a liaison between the Office of University Housing and the students that live within the residential community. RAs are responsible for facilitating an environment conducive to living and learning by way of role modeling, programmatic opportunities, maintenance referral, as well as policy enforcement. RAs are also given training in order to learn what is necessary to perform duties and responsibilities effectively.
While performing the duties of this job, an RA is regularly required to:
- Effectively communicate, give directions, and lead students in the event of an emergency
- Read documents such as policy manuals and safety procedures
- Prepare reports and correspondence
- Lock and unlock doors using a key system
- Operate the master key release system
- Observe surroundings, identify problems or students in distress, and respond according to University Housing protocol
- Respond immediately to potential crisis situations throughout the entire building or area during all hours that an RA is on duty
- Plan, execute, and support community development efforts, including monthly programs and intentional interactions with residents
- Conduct regularly scheduled room safety checks, perform check ins and check outs, and attend weekly meetings
- Work a minimum of 10 hours a week at the Callahan Desk (compensation included in biweekly stipend)
- Serve night and weekend duty on a rotating schedule (an average of 1 weeknight per week and 1 full weekend per month)
- Complete assorted tasks as assigned, such as key inventories, maintenance checks, and preparing check in packets.
An RA must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Also, an RA must be able to move through a three-story building via stairs, and must be able to climb and descend stairs while carrying supplies, materials and/or furniture as needed.
Along with an invaluable and rewarding growth experience, summer RAs receive free housing and a biweekly stipend of $145. Occasionally, completion of special assignments and projects arranged by the summer Hall Director will be compensated with an hourly pay rate of $7.25 per hour. Staff members may be consolidated to housing assignments with other University Housing summer staff employees. Private accommodations will be at an additional cost to the staff member. |
| Qualifications |

Previous experience working and/or living in residential housing preferred. Must be a currently enrolled
NKU student registered for classes for summer term 2014 or fall term 2014. May not be enrolled in more than one class at any time during summer term. Enrollment by summer RAs in a summer five-week session and a summer eight-week session is not permitted because these sessions have overlapping dates.
A 2.5 cumulative and semester
GPA for undergraduate candidates; 3.5 cumulative and semester
GPA for graduate candidates. Must be able to live in University-assigned on-campus housing. Must be able to perform light physical tasks. Must be available to attend weekly staff meetings. Must be able to work a minimum of 10 hours a week at a residential front desk and serve night and weekend duty on a rotating schedule (an average of 1 weeknight per week and 1 full weekend per month). Summer RAs cannot teach or have an internship during their employment, and must have permission of the summer Hall Director to work an outside job. Only outside jobs limited to 10 hours a week or less will be considered for approval, but is not guaranteed.
In addition, students must be in good standing with the University financially and behaviorally.
