Space Dynamics Laboratory (SDL) is seeking a Computer Vision Assistant to join our Strategic & Military Space Division (SMS). The ideal candidate is a highly skilled, motivated student that will work alongside our world class engineers developing and testing machine learning algorithms for space computer vision. Our students are an integral part of the development team and support project reviews, deliveries, and integration.This position will be temporary, covering hire through at least the end of June 2026.

The selected candidate must be able to work as part of a larger computer vision team. You will need to own all aspects of your assigned responsibility alongside your mentor.

The Strategic & Military Space Division delivers advanced satellite and sensor systems that support the Department of Defense and the Intelligence Community. Key Responsibilities:

  • Identifies and benchmarks state-of-the-art AI, machine learning and computer vision models on space-relevant datasets
  • Writes modular, reusable code in Python and MATLAB to perform image analysis
  • Compiles and presents results in a clear and repeatable manner

Required Qualifications:
  • Must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain U.S. Government security clearance
  • Must be currently enrolled at Utah State University majoring in a related field (i.e., electrical engineering, computer science, data science)
  • Must be able to work 15-20 hours per week during school semesters and up to 40 hours per week during summer should employment continue into the summer
  • Ability to work effectively, both independently and as a team member
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong programming experience in Python or MATLAB
  • Experience with image processing in Python or MATLAB
  • Experience with one or more of the following areas: Image Classification, Object Detection, Instance Segmentation, Super Resolution, Pose Estimation, SLAM, Photogrammetry, NeRF, Gaussian Splatting
  • Familiarity with metrics for comparing the results of computer vision algorithms
  • Experience with training, validation, and test workflows for machine learning
  • Experience with the Git version control system

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with image related machine learning packages such as PyTorch, Keras, and YOLO
  • Experience with one or more MLOps platforms
  • Experience with deployment of machine learning algorithms to embedded hardware
  • Experience with deployment and testing of Vision Language Models
