Position Summary

The purpose of the ERDP Early Career Engineering Program at the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant is to hire highly competitive recent engineering graduates from top Engineering Universities and Colleges in desired disciplines* and prepare them for a career as an engineer at the power plant with PG&E. The program has been successfully developed and applied since 2000 and has produced many excellent engineers and leaders.

The Early Career Engineering Program is designed to provide engineers with multiple job experiences within the first two years combined with structured engineering classroom training. This provides the engineers with an introduction to the breadth of engineering work and enables them to meet many of the plant staff.Each engineer is assigned a discipline specific job rotation that will include a rotational outage assignment in addition to a training rotation between 6-10 weeks.

The rotations may be in Design Engineering, Systems Engineering, or specialty disciplines such as Reactor Engineering, Predictive Maintenance, Reliability Engineering, Component Engineering, In-Service Inspection, EFIN and License Renewal. The program is structured so the engineer works in a specific group for an Engineering Supervisor that assigns tasks that enable the engineer to perform work and obtain qualifications through performance. The outage assignments may be with an engineering testing team or engineering program group such as in-service inspection, refueling team or turbine team. The classroom is typically scheduled within the first year and is on the order of 6 weeks in duration. Homework is assigned and studying is expected.

During the two-year program the engineer is a rotational development program trainee and employee. At the time of placement late in the second year the engineer is promoted to Associate Engineer and becomes part of the ESC (Engineers and Scientists of California) Union. Promotional paths from there follow the ESC - PG&E agreement. Placement is made by the Engineering Managers with approval of the Engineering Director and balances the need of the company with the skills and desires of the engineer.

* The most frequent disciplines hired are Nuclear, Mechanical and Electrical Engineers. Civil Engineers and other engineering disciplines graduates are also hired but less frequently.

PG&E is providing the hourly rate that the company in good faith believes it might pay for this position at the time of the job posting. This compensation rate is specific to the locality of the job. The actual hourly rate paid to an individual will be based on multiple factors, including, but not limited to, specific skills, education, licenses or certifications, experience, market value, geographic location, and internal equity.

The hourly rate for a bachelor's degree is $49.52 and for a master's degree is $54.33.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Qualified candidates will have received or will be receiving a Bachelor or Master degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, Nuclear, Material, or General Engineering only from May 2024 to June 2026 from an ABET accredited university.

Desired:

  • Former DCPP or PG&E Intern
  • EIT or FE certification
  • Coursework or experience with HVAC Systems, Fire Protection, Instrument & Controls, Power Generation, Mechatronics.
  • 3.0 GPA or greater in both cumulative GPA and major GPA with classwork supporting power plant knowledge
  • Engineering intern experience in utilities, municipalities, construction, or engineering consultation
  • Ability to work in a team environment and support fellow team members
  • Strong problem solving and analytical skills
  • Strong communication skills, both oral and written
  • Takes initiative and can work independently with minimal direction
