Title: Business System Analyst - I

Location: Columbia, SC (Role is Fully Onsite and has the potential to move to partial onsite once fully trained.)

Duration: 6 months (Contract To Hire?)

Hours: 8:00 AM - 5:00 PM with a 1-hour lunch, flexible - Occasional off hours and weekends

Duties:

Day to Day:

  • We operate in an agile Scrum environment with standard agile ceremonies.
  • A typical day in this role involves a combination of Agile collaboration and action request fulfillment.
  • A typical day for the Business Analyst begins with participating in the daily Scrum stand-up, where they provide updates on progress and help remove any blockers related to requirements or user stories.
  • Throughout the day, they work closely with the Product Owner to refine the product backlog, write and update user stories, and ensure acceptance criteria are clear and testable.
  • They collaborate with developers and testers to clarify requirements for the secure, web-based Java application, often reviewing API documentation, data models, and UI wireframes.
  • While they are not coding, they are deeply involved in supporting the development process by analyzing how new features integrate with existing Java-based components and ensuring that security and compliance requirements are addressed.
  • The BA will use Digital.ai's Agility tool to manage work items, support sprint planning and retrospectives, and facilitate user acceptance testing (UAT) by coordinating with stakeholders and validating that the delivered functionality meets business needs.
  • Defines customer needs in technical and business contexts. Ensure the proposed technical and business solutions meet the customer's objectives for the work effort.
  • Provide guidance with planning and prioritization of business analysis activities in support of large project and support efforts.
  • 25% Elicit and document user requirements to meet a business objective. Identify and validate requirements and organize the information into a logical document using business analysis models that is understood by the customer and Information Systems.
  • 20% Respond to questions and ensure understanding of why the business solution was chosen. Guide both technical and customer departments in the development of the systems
  • 15% Ensure the accurate deployment of solutions through review of problem logs, assisting with test plans and test matrices, and other analysis activities
  • 15% Validate the business need for solutions to business problems and process improvements.
  • 10% Facilitate the transfer of knowledge about the "big picture" direction of the business units to others who support them.
  • 10% Provide input on the business direction for system changes.
  • 5% Mentor less experienced business systems analysts.


Team:

Clients, eCommerce department, eServices Portal Team. The eServices portal group has three Scrum development teams of about 6 people each. We are currently working on Spring upgrades in addition to some user facing enhancements. The culture is collaborative, positive, and team oriented.

Soft Skills:

  1. Strong Communication Skills (Verbal & Written) - Essential

    The BA will serve as a bridge between business stakeholders and the development team. Clear, concise communication is critical for writing user stories, facilitating backlog grooming, and ensuring shared understanding across technical and non-technical audiences. They will also participate in team demos and stakeholder presentations.
  2. Critical Thinking & Problem Solving - Essential

    The BA will need to analyze complex business processes, identify gaps, and propose feasible solutions that align with technical constraints and security requirements.
  3. Collaboration & Teamwork - Highly Important

    As part of a cross-functional Agile Scrum team, the BA must work closely with developers, testers, product owners, and UX designers. A collaborative mindset ensures smooth sprint planning, daily stand-ups, and retrospectives.
  4. Adaptability & Flexibility - Important

    Agile environments are dynamic. The BA should be comfortable with shifting priorities, evolving requirements, and iterative delivery. They must be able to pivot quickly while maintaining focus on business value.
  5. Empathy & Stakeholder Awareness - Important

    Understanding stakeholder perspectives and user needs is key to delivering a secure and user-friendly application. Empathy helps the BA advocate for both business goals and end-user experience.


Preferred Software and Other Tools: Visio, MS Project or similar software, data mining using DB2, SQL, and/or other tools.

Nice To Have:

  • Digital.ai Agility for backlog management
  • Experience with Secure Application Environments for understanding of authentication, authorization, and data privacy considerations.
  • Agile Certifications (e.g., Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO), PMI-ACP)

Required Education:

Bachelor's degree in computer science, Business Administration, or other job-related field. or 4 years of job-related work experience or 2 years of job-related experience plus an associate's degree in computer science, Business Administration or other job-related degree

Required Work Experience: 6 years of IT business analysis experience.

Degree Equivalency: 4 years of job-related work experience or 2 years of job-related experience plus an associate's degree in computer science, Business Administration, or other job-related degree
