The Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences (

The Department of Psychology (
http://psychology.ecu.edu) has 34 full-time and 8 part-time faculty members, many of whom routinely collaborate with colleagues throughout the schools and colleges of
ECU and have established strong connections across research and clinical endeavors with ECU's School of Dental Medicine, College of Education, College of Business, and various departments in Brody School of Medicine, including Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry, and Cardiology.
The undergraduate psychology program at
ECU is among the most popular majors on the campus with over 800 declared majors annually. Likewise, the undergraduate neuroscience program at
ECU is among the most popular interdisciplinary majors. Undergraduate research opportunities are offered to students across the faculty research labs in the Department. The Department offers two degrees at the undergraduate level (the BA Psychology and BS Neuroscience degrees) which boast well over 1,300 declared and intended majors. Since 2024, the Department has offered the B.A. in Psychology through 100% online asynchronous teaching at an accelerated pace as part of the
UNC System's online education partnership called Project Kitty Hawk (
https://www.northcarolina.edu/project-kitty-hawk/). Project Kitty Hawk, or
PKH, is designed primarily to serve adult learners and part-way home students, and it is a critical component of the university's strategic plan.
ECU currently offers five online degrees in partnership with
PKH. ECU's degree in psychology boasts the highest enrollment in
PKH in North Carolina.
The MA Psychology degree program has three concentrations available, leading to graduate degrees in Industrial and Organizational Psychology and a Specialist-level program in School Psychology, as well as a graduate certificate in Quantitative Methods for the Social and Behavioral Sciences.
The Department also has a doctoral program in Health Psychology with three separate concentrations - Occupational Health Psychology, Clinical Health Psychology, and Pediatric School Psychology. Both the Clinical Health Psychology and Pediatric School Psychology concentrations are accredited by the American Psychological Association. The Health Psychology program is a recipient of a Health Resources and Services Administration (
HRSA) Graduate Psychology Education training grant. The unique combination of training across major areas of psychology with emphasis in health psychology has led the program to be nationally ranked by US News and World Report.
The Department operates a state-of-the art Psychology Training clinic with significant investment from the State of North Carolina (
https://psychology.ecu.edu/pass/) through the Expanding Primary Care Workforce legislative initiative. This clinic provides clinical care to the public and training to doctoral students.
The academic productivity of the faculty of psychology in research with publications and grant awards and student credit hours highlights the versatility of the department's missions. Last year alone, the Department secured over $2 million in external funding and generated over 31,000 student credit hours. |

The Department of Psychology seeks to fill the position of chair at the tenured rank of Associate Professor or Professor (preferred), with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026. This is a 12-month, leave-earning position. This is an internal posting available only to
ECU employees. The primary responsibilities for this position include: overseeing administration and leadership of the department; promoting excellence in faculty research and teaching; mentoring faculty members; assisting in efforts to secure external funding; ensuring quality, integrity, and growth of student degree programs; supporting departmental, college, and university policies and standards; fostering collegial relations among all stakeholders; serving as an advocate for departmental needs and priorities; and effectively representing the department to internal and external constituents. The chair is expected to spend at least 50% of their time on administration and leadership duties, with the remaining time devoted to research, teaching, and service. The chair will teach regularly in the department and maintain an active research agenda. Service to the university, community, and profession is expected. The chair will be committed to fairness in hiring, resource allocations, promotion, research, engagement, and teaching. They will provide leadership to meet the needs of a broad community of learners and scholars with varied intellectual interests.
