Basic Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in a related specialized area or field, or equivalent is required plus a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience; or Master's degree.

CLEARANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Department of Defense Secret security clearance is preferred at time of hire. Applicants selected will be subject to a U.S. Government security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Due to the nature of work performed within our facilities, U.S. citizenship is required.


Responsibilities for this Position
  • As a Technical Writer team member at GDMS, you will be working in a team environment to create and validate XML based documentation products for sailors to operate and maintain a complex submarine-based weapon system.

    The ideal candidate:

    • Has experience with XML based authoring standards such as S1000D and familiarity with complex US Navy strategic deterrent weapon control systems
    • Has experience developing user documentation according to Navy standards
    • Enjoys working as part of a team in a fast-paced environment

    However, we are willing to train the right candidate.

    Technical Writer team members are responsible for:

    • Developing and delivering documentation per MIL standards and in accordance with strict schedule
    • Managing multiple projects concurrently while ensuring both quality standards and schedule are consistently met
    • Interfacing with local Navy Program Management Office (PMO) and the SP customer for approvals and deliveries
    • Completing testing of procedural documentation in a simulated lab environment.
    • Authoring electronic documentation using SGML/XML and learning coding standards
    • Understanding and learning internal process documentation
    • Investigating technical issues using drawings, verifying on lab equipment, researching within existing documentation (CR investigation process)
    • Creating inputs based on technical information provided by engineering
    • Coordinating and participating in lab shifts
    • Ability to access and navigate external websites
    • Understanding the use of internal tools and processes (CONDOR, JIRA, CMS, etc....)
    • Communicating with SMEs and other GDMS personnel on issues and educating on GDMS processes and tools
    • Utilizing checklist and process documents to ensure standards and requirements are met
    • Understanding documentation updates being made and ability to explain what the changes are and why they are being made
    • Understanding of other departments' processes and requirements (i.e. SQA)
    • Understanding CUI requirements for documentation
    • Understanding security processes and requirements
    • Accurately record all hours worked
    • Critical thinking and looking forward beyond the task at hand
    • Being punctual and engaged
    • Communicating effectively and efficiently

    What sets you apart:

    • A clear interest in and understanding of the XML documentation development lifecycle for US military applications, including DTD, style sheets, and schema
    • A hunger to learn new information quickly and handle increasing responsibilities with growing complexity
    • Experience interfacing with the Strategic Systems and/or Sea Systems Command government/contractor community.

    Workplace Options:

    This position can be fully on-site or flex (ideally able to be on site 3 days/week)

Target salary range: USD $81,352.00/Yr. - USD $88,025.00/Yr. This estimate represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors (geographic location, etc.). Actual pay may vary. This job posting will remain open until the position is filled.
