What to Expect
The Cell Equipment design team is responsible for delivering high-capacity manufacturing systems to production. Tesla is seeking a system integration engineer to join the team in developing ultra-reliable equipment for a variety of cell development projects including all Formation manufacturing processes, all Cell Qualification phases, and special applications. The engineer is expected to perform integration testing through all product builds beginning with PCBA component & system design validation, factory acceptance testing, and production sustaining. The engineer will be a key partner between firmware and electrical design engineering during concept stage, implementation, and design validation. The role is also expected to create a scalable test infrastructure covering firmware/software behaviors and safety systems performance. You will show outstanding organizational and communication skills and an eagerness to push the industry forward.

What You'll Do
  • Lead and control the hardware and firmware integration across multiple teams (EE, Manufacturing, Process), including component level and full system validation
  • Guarantee functional, performance, safety, and reliability requirements are successfully achieved. Bring-up and debug new revisions of hardware and firmware to ensure proper product behavior and system interactions during design and deployment of equipment and features
  • Create and execute system test plans for new firmware and software features, ensure the validation infrastructure is properly designed to stress test the components and full system for achieving highest quality product. Provide direct and accurate feedback to design owners for continuous improvement
  • Investigate and respond to escalations involving Cell Formation and/or Cell Qualification equipment. Debug, document, and report issues in detail to relevant design engineering teams. Lead failure analysis to understand root cause and drive resolution for hardware and firmware failures originating in component, system validation, and production
  • Develop an in-depth understanding of all manufacturing systems and their integration, specifically power electronics and Li-Ion battery design/testing. Understand how each system plays into the overall cell manufacturing performance and Production Operations staff experience. Help various cross-functional teams understand how their systems and related decisions impact different cell manufacturing systems
  • Design and implement software applications for automated system validation (regression test)
  • Key leader of DFMEA as part of the product design, integration, and test process
  • Hands-on with hardware bring-up and prototyping

What You'll Bring
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Computer Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • Strong understanding of electrical engineering fundamentals with some mechanical engineering background
  • Exceptional analytical problem-solving skills, able to identify and surface issues within complex HW/SW systems involving network microprocessors and software-controlled electrical or electromechanical devices
  • Hands-on experience with electrical and software engineering components and an understanding of how they interact in a complex product
  • Proficiency with EE tools (scopes, logic analyzers, power supplies, electronic loads). Understanding of a variety of communication systems (CAN, Ethernet, MQTT, GRPC, websocket, SPI, I2C)
  • Preferred: capable of delivering high quality Python and/or Golang software solutions. Experience with JSON, Protobuf, REST, HTTP/S, SQL, Numpy, network programming
  • Preferred: experience with electric vehicle charging systems or energy storage development
  • Preferred: experience working with high power (50kW+) and/or high voltage (1kVDC, 480VAC) products. Working understanding of how grid-tied storage systems function and interact with the grid
  • Excellent communication skills, can clearly communicate technical findings to various audiences, be available to other team members when questions arise. Excellent attention to detail
  • Willingness to travel to company and/or supplier locations as needed
