Financial Services Specialist - Bad Debt (hybrid)

Job Description

A successful Bad Debt Specialist within Northwell's Financial Services department has a passion for delivering extraordinary service to our customers, who deserve and expect the ultimate in health system experiences. The Specialist will be an exceptionally customer focused individual who will support the Bad Debt team deliver a high touch, premium service experience when resolving Bad Debt issues. We want extraordinary individuals who can surpass our customer's expectations by providing a unique interaction with our organization that strives to drive high satisfaction and loyalty. Assists processing payments, issues patient receipts, and maintains collection log.

Job Responsibility




  • Verifies patients' insurance and collects additional insurance such as No Fault and Workers Compensation.
  • Performs financial assessment of patients.
  • Assists patients and/or families in resolving hospital bills; advises and counsels patients of their payment responsibility due to the hospital.
  • Establishes patients' pro-rated financial obligations and sets-up payment arrangements/contracts.
  • Follows up on scheduled payments via mail and telephone.
  • Maintains daily work log of payments collected.
  • Operates with direct guidance and work assignments are generally straightforward and of moderate complexity.

Job Qualification



  • Bachelor's Degree required, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • 0-1 years of relevant experience, required.


Preferred skills/experience:

* Minimum of one (1) year call center, rev cycle, billing or relevant experience.

* Experience with Northwell Health host systems and billing process.

* Experience in a medical setting, preferred.

* Knowledge of billing procedures, preferred.

* Proficient in PC applications (Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, Word).

* Excellent customer service, communication and problem resolution skills.

* Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

* Proficiency in data analysis and quantification including interpreting statistical data to identify trends and exceptions.
