Selects methods and techniques to obtain desired results.

Workforce Data Engineer will support maintenance of UCSF's governed Master Person Registry (Person Dimension). Will also design, develop, and validate workforce data models that integrate traditional and AI-augmented approaches. Leveraging dimensional modeling principles (Kimball methodology) and SSIS-supported data pipelines, this role integrates data from multiple enterprise sources to create reliable analytic datasets and metrics. The analyst monitors and validates results, including generated by AI on platforms such as Power BI/Data Fabric, Databricks, and Tableau Pulse, tuning inputs, thresholds, and feature selections to ensure accuracy, relevance, and business alignment.

Serving as a liaison with external vendors, the role evaluates analytic solutions and dashboards for quality, transparency, and adherence to both Kimball and enterprise standards. The analyst translates complex analytic findings into clear, actionable insights, dashboards, and visualizations for leadership, guiding data-driven decisions while maintaining rigorous standards for governance, privacy, and security. This position represents a significant expansion of scope, combining technical proficiency, AI stewardship, vendor engagement, and independent analytic judgment.

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $143,900 - $215,800 (Annual Rate).

Department Description

The mission of the Enterprise Information and Analytics (EIA) department is to advance UCSF's institutional priorities by enhancing access to and the use of data and analytics, including appropriate data platforms and data governance, in a manner that meets the unique needs across the education, research, and care mission areas. The department achieves its goals by working with clinical, research, education, and business partners to organize, integrate, govern, and transform UCSF's data assets into actionable insight and information.

People Analytics owns enterprise-wide assets for UCSF as a whole, used for both operational and analytical purposes, as well as departmental and business assets to drive business insights and decisions.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 5 years' experience in data analytics or data management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum 4 years of experience performing advanced data analysis using SQL and/or analytic programming languages (e.g., R, Python, Stata, SPSS) T-SQL in Microsoft SQL Management Studio preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience integrating data from multiple enterprise systems for analytic purposes
  • Experience developing analytic datasets, metrics, and dashboards supporting decision-making
  • Working knowledge of data warehouse concepts, ETL principles, and analytic data modeling
  • Hands-on experience developing and supporting SSIS pipelines for analytic data preparation
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including with internal and external stakeholders
  • Demonstrated ability to validate, interpret, and contextualize analytic outputs
  • Professionalism and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential workforce data
  • Demonstrated ability to work with others from diverse backgrounds. Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated service orientation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate technical information to technical and non-technical personnel at various levels in the organization.
  • Self-motivated and works independently and as part of a team. Able to self-manage projects once priorities are set.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience applying Kimball dimensional modeling principles in analytic datasets
  • Experience with PeopleSoft HCM or similar HR systems; Experience with workforce analytics or people-related data
  • 3+ years of experience integrating data from diverse sources and formats, including delimited text files (CSV/TSV/PSV), fixed-width files, JSON, XML, YAML, Parquet/Avro/ORC, and Excel (XLS/XLSX), as well as relational databases via ODBC/JDBC.
  • 2+ years of experience developing or integrating with APIs for data ingestion (REST/JSON), including secure authentication (OAuth2/API keys) and operational support (logging/monitoring/error handling).
