Job Description:

The Special Education Lead Teacher (Licensed: 11-month) coordinates a high school department in accordance with applicable school division, state and federal policies related to special education at the classroom level; provides support to teachers and assigned department personnel; provides recommendations for resources, necessary to enhance services for students with disabilities; and serves as a resource to department personnel by providing support and guidance in all instructional and procedural aspects of special education. This is an 11-month, 216 day Licensed Teacher position, reporting to the School Prinicpal.

Qualifications:



  • Education: A Master's Degree from an Accredited College or University required. Degree related to the position, such as Special Education, Educational Leadership, and/or Adminstration & Supervision required.


  • Certificates & Licenses: A Valid Virginia Department of Education Teaching PostGraduate License, with an endorsement in Special Education K-12 (General Curriculum, Adaptive Curriculum) required. An Administration & Supervision PreK-12 endorsement is perferred.


  • Experience: At least 5 years of job related experience within the specialized field of Special Education, with increasing levels of responsibility is required.



Essential Functions:



  • Confers with special education and all other department personnel, as necessary, to provide guidance and mentoring to ensure effective delivery of special education services. (e.g. instructional strategies, development of curriculum, students' needs, etc.)
  • Manages caseloads and scheduling for special education staff in accordance with state regulations to ensure efficient use of resources.
  • Manages the ACHS Special Education Initial Eligibility and Reevaluation process to ensure compliance with ACPS guidelines.
  • Works with Accountability Specialist to ensure timely development of Individualized Education Program (IEP) documents once eligibility process is completed.
  • Assists school administration in providing information and required data to develop administrative reports and supporting the overall leadership of site operations.
  • Conducts department meetings in conjunction with Accountability Specialist to disseminate and receive information and ensure service delivery in compliance with established ACPS guidelines.
  • Provide recommendations regarding resource expenditures necessary to ensure effective delivery of services to students with disabilities.
  • Observes and supports classroom instruction, as requested by school administration, to evaluate the implementation of effective specialized instruction including student access to core content curriculum, co-teaching, specially designed instructional strategies, use of instructional interventions, data collection and classroom management.
  • Collaborate with the Accountability Specialist to develop professional development activities which will ensure the effective delivery of services to students with disabilities.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings for the purpose of representing both their department/school and ensuring the development of articulated services to students with disabilities.
  • Performs a variety of functions, if requested by the administration, for the purpose of addressing master schedule needs, staff position needs and/or ensuring instructional staff and paraprofessionals maintain high level of competencies and productivity.
  • Assist administration, when requested, in the evaluation of special education paraprofessionals.
  • Responds to inquiries, if requested by school administration, to parents, outside agencies, central office administration and other community contacts to provide information, assistance and/or direction.
  • Serves as a liaison between school administration and department staff to enhance communications between all parties.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the department.



Compensation:



  • Step Placement and Salary for this position is determined by The ACPS Teachers and Other Licensed Staff Salary Scale



Clearances:



  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.
  • Public Health Compliance - Must follow safety and health protocols.
