Position Description

Performs manual work in the operation of heavy, medium, and light mobile equipment, and the maintenance of all such equipment used in the Grounds Maintenance Department. May act as crew leader in the absence of next level supervision.

Major/Essential Functions

1. Equipment Operation (Heavy Machinery & Vehicles)

  • Operate and maneuver equipment such as bulldozers, road graders, backhoes, trench excavators, and other machinery using blades and attachments to remove topsoil, vegetation, rocks, or to distribute and level earth or terrain.

  • Start engines and use throttles, switches, pedals, and levers to safely operate assigned machinery.

  • Load, move, and transport dirt, rocks, materials, equipment, and supplies using trucks, tractors, cranes, shovels, graders, or related equipment.

  • Service and perform basic operator-level maintenance on assigned equipment.

2. Grounds Maintenance
  • Maintain all aspects of grounds including turf, irrigation systems, fences, trees, shrubs, ground cover, walkways, and hardscapes.

  • Observe and inspect grounds to identify, document, and report hazards, maintenance needs, and operational issues.

3. Safety & Compliance
  • Utilize proper safety equipment and follow established safety procedures to prevent personal injury and property damage.

  • Comply with Environmental Health & Safety policies and departmental procedures, including the grounds maintenance safety program.

  • Take proactive actions to avoid potential hazards or obstructions while performing duties.

4. Communication & Reporting
  • Advise the foreman of project status, operational problems, safety concerns, and identified hazards.

5. Emergency & On-Call Responsibilities
  • Serve as essential personnel and be available for on-call duty for emergency maintenance or campus preparation during inclement or hazardous weather conditions.

6. Miscellaneous Duties
  • Perform related work as required.

Required Qualifications

10th grade education or equivalent plus three years related experience including some in the campus Grounds Maintenance Dept. Commercial drivers license or willingness to obtain such a license (CDL). Additional job related experience may substitute on a year-by-year basis for required education as long as applicant possesses desired written skills. Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable to operate motor vehicles.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Knowledge and experience in all grounds maintenance activities and equipment, including irrigation systems.
  • Skilled in the operation, repair, and maintenance of all grounds-related equipment.
  • Able to read and interpret blueprints and consistently follow all safety regulations and procedures.
  • Three years related experience including some in supervisory/managerial role.

Compensation is commensurate upon the qualifications of the individual selected and budgetary guidelines of the hiring department, as well as the institutional pay plan.
