STS Technical Services is hiring an Aviation Human Factors & Safety Policy Specialist in McLean, Virginia. Position Overview

The Aviation Human Factors & Safety Policy Specialist applies human factors and human systems integration principles to aviation safety, operations, and training. The goal is simple - to ensure that pilot workload, operational realities, and system interactions are reflected in every regulation, SOP, and training program.


Key Responsibilities

  • Evaluate flight deck designs, automation systems, SOPs, training programs, and operational concepts from a human factors perspective
  • Advise on regulatory proposals and emerging technologies to identify and address pilot-centered issues
  • Analyze operational and safety data to identify trends and recommend mitigations or procedural improvements
  • Support domestic and international standards development and harmonization initiatives
  • Collaborate with pilot committees, regulators, and technical workgroups on human factors projects
  • Translate complex technical and regulatory issues into clear, actionable insights for leadership and stakeholders

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Aviation Human Factors or a related field (or equivalent professional experience)
  • Minimum of 5 years of post-graduate aviation human factors experience
  • Deep understanding of FARs and CARs; prior experience with airlines, FAA, or Transport Canada preferred
  • Pilot's license with instrument rating strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated expertise in SOP design, workload management, and human-centered operational analysis
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and time management skills
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment

Physical Requirements

  • Primarily office-based position
  • Must be able to lift up to 10 lbs (up to 50 lbs during travel)
  • Local, national, and international travel required up to 25%
