What to Expect
CAE engineers on In-House Cell Design team define solution spaces for next-generation Tesla products. Our simulation scope includes computational fluid dynamics, dynamic structural response, thermal runway, and advanced high-speed manufacturing processes. You'll develop and validate frontier multi-physics models that illuminate unobservable phenomena- unlimited opportunity for challenge and innovation. Where existing analytical tools are insufficient, you'll devise novel methodologies that enable fast, accurate outputs. Tesla moves quickly, so being self-motivated and disciplined is critical. The role requires strong fundamentals in mechanical engineering analysis, a passion to push the boundaries of technology, and the tenacity to ensure your results are physically realized.
What You'll Do
- Build frontier FEA, CFD and Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) multi-physics models to the micron-level fidelities demanded by battery cell geometries
- Evolve cell mechanical designs via bi-directional collaboration with multiple engineering disciplines
- Perform advanced CAE, CFD and FSI simulations to map out or enhance specific design attributes or novel manufacturing processes (such electrolyte transport and foil bending)
- Drive design-for-manufacturing optimizations in CAE, CFD and FSI while maintaining compliance to product & factory requirements
- Correlate and validate predictive analytical models of materials and processes to physical results
- Conduct analytical optimization studies utilizing tools like DOE / DFSS techniques on components and assemblies to hit performance requirements with excellent cost and mass
- Provide input in the creation of component specification, component DFMEA, and other technical design documents where analysis plays a pivotal role
- Document & communicate results with timeless clarity- author concise technical summaries that distill complex physics and expand design team intuition
What You'll Bring
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred or equivalent experience
- Minimum 5 years of work experience and successful launch of 2+ unique products
- Expert CAE knowledge in the context of developing and launching a new hardware product: Finite Element Analysis, Finite Volume Method, Fluid Structure Interaction, Smooth Particles Hydrodynamics, CFD, Micro-fluidics, Capillary Flow, Surface Tension, Applied Solid Mechanics, Material Science, Computational Numerical Methods, Optimization Tools & Techniques
- Applied experience with LS-DYNA, ANSYS-FLUENT, STAR CCM is required (ALE and Micro-fluidics highly desirable)
- Background simulating steady state and transient structural, single and multi-phase fluid flows, including micro-fluidics and capillary action in small, precision products
- Experience analyzing highly coupled structure-fluid-thermal problems for electronics components and fluid flow through small spaces, porous media
- Track record of independently pioneering solutions to thorny engineering problems on a deadline
- Proven skill deconstructing test scenarios with logic, analytics, and root-causing correlations
- Proven ability to iterate quickly in a collaborative engineering environment (automotive or similar)
- Experience with battery cell, battery pack, or power electronics applications is beneficial
