Times Community News (TCN) is looking for a temporary assistant editor to help oversee the visual presentation of the Daily Pilot and TimesOC. These community newspapers publish daily online and four times a week in print editions distributed with the Los Angeles Times in Orange County.
This is a six-month temporary role. Working closely with the executive editor, the assistant editor will have broad oversight over photo, copy, design and social media. This job requires training in design and candidates with experience in Newsgate/Cue will be given strong preference. The assistant editor will design pages about three days a week. They will also help with line editing and assignments and coordinate closely with the TCN executive editor.
Responsibilities:
- Oversee visual presentation of TimesOC and the Daily Pilot. This means assigning and placing photos and designing print pages on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays
- Copy edit community stories and help with letters to the editor and opinion pieces
- Oversee the social media accounts for the Daily Pilot and TimesOC
- Edit local community coverage; ensure that reporting is attentive to detail, consistently accurate, delivered with high quality under constant deadlines and edited to conform with accepted journalistic techniques, ethical standards and Times style
- Publish multiple stories a day online and help book the print edition
- Apply creativity to story generation, visual element generation and the presentation of news and information in the most relevant, interesting way
- Ensure that the department meets digital and print production deadlines and maintains ideal story flow
Requirements:
- Bachelor's degree preferred
- One or more years of design and/or editing experience
- The ability to design pages (Newsgate/Cue experience a plus)
- Commitment to the company's mission and strategy
- A nuanced understanding of audience data and analytics and a track record of using data to make informed decisions on coverage
- The ability to foster excellent communication with peers, supervisors, department and newsroom
- Maintaining up-to-date skills on various digital platforms and keeping abreast of current events and newsmakers in news, sports, culture and topic-area trends
