The work schedule and work list for the incumbents is established based on operational demands and resource availability and may fluctuate based on the changing needs of the department. Staff members may be required to work weekend shifts, holidays, and overtime

Key Responsibilities & Essential Functions:

* Basic Husbandry

* Learn, practice and demonstrate with guidance basic proficiency in animal care, husbandry, colony maintenance, room maintenance and operations, sanitation, record keeping and relevant information systems, standard operating procedures, and staff request.

* These duties may be conducted with varying requirements dependent on location such as standard animal room

* Transport clean and soil supplies through materials airlock.

* Progresses from straight transfer (no pups) to cages w/litter, aging, sexing, and weaning. Cage changing according to PI staff requests.

* Successful and accurate daily Welfare check for proper food, water, bedding and wellbeing. Observe & report with guidance variances from health standard.

* Identifies abnormal animals and how to report them.

* Room Sanitation

* Colony Management/Maintaining Colonies (JMCRS)

* Maintains with guidance appropriate breeding scheme(s), program or area specific
o Manage with guidance breeding rotation (make-up, retirement, non-productive units)

* Maintain accurate and legible cage cards and data input Packing and Shipping

* Learns to ship packages internally, externally, and internationally following IATA, DOT, and applicable SOPs

* Learns to Receive packages and confirm them using established software

* Able to track, count, and move inventory from receiving to storage to point of use

* Processes materials behind barrier following applicable SOPs

* Works with applicable departments to utilize calibrated instruments to validate equipment.

* Handles waste following proper waste streams and applicable SOPs

Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* High School diploma or GED and knowledge of barrier room function and animal husbandry as normally acquired with 3 months successful experience.

* Successful completion of Primary Animal Care Training and successful completion of 90-day introductory period is required for advancement.

* Demonstrated ability to maintain mouse colonies and applying proper record keeping.

* Demonstrated team player with professional, positive attitude and willingness to be flexible

* Demonstrated ability to identify sick/ill/deviant mice with guidance.

* Demonstrated ability to efficiently and accurately use word processing, web browser, and database software to record and report activities

* Regular, reliable and consistent attendance in accordance with departmental and Laboratory guidelines

* Ability to be accurate in transcribing/entering/extracting data.

* Oral and written communications skills sufficient to clearly convey and receive information and ideas.

* Interpersonal relationship skills sufficient to allow incumbent to function as an effective team member.

* Able to work flexible shifts (evening/week-end/holidays).

The hourly wage range is $18.59 - $25.56 per hour. Pay will be determined based upon qualifications and experience.
