It ensures that all modifications, from initial design to final production, are systematically documented, reviewed, approved, implemented and released in IFS. This process is crucial for maintaining the integrity, consistency, and accuracy of project documentation, preventing errors, and ensuring that everyone is working with the latest, approved information in IFS (Kearfott's ERP system).. Key Aspects of Configuration Control that the candidate should be familiar with: Change Management: Configuration control focuses on managing changes to engineering drawings and documents released in IFS. This involves identifying proposed changes, evaluating their impact, obtaining necessary approvals, implementing and releasing the changes in a controlled manner. Documentation: All changes are meticulously documented, using Revision Notices (RNs), including the reason for the change, who approved of it, and when it was implemented. This documentation is essential for auditing, traceability, and is released in IFS, for future reference. Version Control: A key aspect of configuration control is version control. This involves tracking different versions of documents, ensuring that the latest approved version is readily available and released in IFS; in addition, the outdated versions are clearly identified as obsolete documents also in IFS. Impact Assessment: Before any change is implemented, its potential impact on other parts of the project is assessed, and this information can be found in the Disposition of Items section of an RN. This helps prevent unintended consequences and ensures that changes are well-integrated. Approval Process: Configuration control includes a formal approval process for changes, that are documented on RNs and released in IFS. This ensures that only necessary and well-considered changes are incorporated into the project documentation and then released accordingly in IFS. Benefits of Configuration Control: * By ensuring that all changes are controlled and documented in IFS, configuration control helps improve the overall quality of the project. This reduces the risk of errors and inconsistencies. * Accurate and up-to-date documentation (released in IFS) helps prevent costly rework and delays caused by using outdated information. * Well-managed configuration control facilitates collaboration by ensuring that everyone is working with the same, latest correct version of documentation, released in IFS. * Configuration control helps organizations meet regulatory and industry standards, such as ISO 9001requirements, of which Kearfott is a member. * Configuration control provides a clear audit trail of all changes, making it easy to trace the evolution of the project documentation and identify the source of any issues. * Tools and Systems: * Organizations utilize various tools and systems to support configuration control, including: * These systems provide a central repository for all project documentation, track versions, manage access rights, and automate workflows. * Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems integrate configuration management with other aspects of product development, providing a holistic approach to managing product information. * Some CAD software has built-in configuration management capabilities, allowing for version control and change management directly within the design environment.
