Based in our downtown Denver, CO office, the Environmental Engineer in Training (EIT) will work under the direction of multiple professional engineers, professional geologists/hydrogeologists, and designers to perform complex assignments, exercising judgment in evaluation, selection, and modification or standard engineering techniques and procedures. The position will provide a professional introduction to waste/CCR facility design, waste/CCR planning, remediation design/planning, construction administration, construction quality assurance, and business development and project management. The EIT will have opportunities for broader engagement with other HDR teams and projects, including water resources, building engineering services, power, industrial, and transportation.


The candidate should have a strong academic and internship background along with an initiative to perform engineering tasks related to waste management, environmental remediation, facility design, planning, and stormwater management for municipal and private clients. Candidate must be adaptable to conditions including fast-paced and deadline driven work environment.


The position will require frequent travel/fieldwork (60-70%) along the Front Range and less frequent travel to other Colorado areas.


The primary duties of the Environmental EIT are to conduct, supervise, or direct remedial engineering projects. Environmental EIT responsibilities include:



  • Help design and conduct field studies and be responsible for data collection, compilation, and analysis for a variety of geology and/or hydrogeology-related projects.
  • Complete surface and groundwater sampling including coordination with laboratories, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Coordinate compliance sampling for municipal, power, water/wastewater, and industrial clients.
  • Communicate issues in a timely manner to team members and supervisor.
  • Work on diverse remedial engineering projects that with a wide range of contaminants (VOCs/SVOCs/metals/PCBs/Pesticides/NAPL) in all types of media. (soil/groundwater/sediment/bedrock/abandoned mines, etc.) utilizing innovative remedial technologies (P&T/removal/dredging/ISS/chemical oxidation/bioremediation/capping).
  • Work with PMs and clients to develop scope, schedule and budgets for remediation projects.
  • Work with senior engineers in preparation of engineering deliverables including design reports, construction drawings, technical specifications, cost estimates and construction schedules.
  • Work independently on technical tasks involving data analysis, interpreting results, and preparing technical reports, plans and specifications under the guidance of senior engineers on larger projects.


Preferred Qualifications



  • OSHA 40 Hour HAZWOPER, First Aid CPR, and/or MSHA Certifications.
  • Prior experience with environmental compliance including development of monitoring plans, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Experience sampling for contaminants such as PFAS, heavy metals, volatile organic compounds.
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and as part of a team.
  • An attitude and commitment to being an active participant of our employee-owned culture.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Environmental Engineering or closely related Engineering field
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

The expected compensation range for this position depends upon skills, experience, education and geographical location. (Stated benefits are for full-time regular positions. Temporary and part-time roles eligible for limited benefits.) Colorado: $70,032.00 - $94,749.00
