As the SMT Area Manager in a PCBA Manufacturing Facility, you are responsible for leading and optimizing the Surface Mount Technology production line. Your role ensures that SMT operations meet quality standards, production targets, and delivery timelines while maintaining a safe and efficient work environment.
Essential Functions



  • Production Oversight: Manage daily SMT line operations including stencil printing, pick-and-place, reflow soldering, X-Ray and AOI/AXI inspection processes.
  • Team Leadership: Supervise and develop SMT technicians and operators, ensuring proper training, performance management, and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Process Optimization: Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on cycle time reduction, yield enhancement, and defect minimization using Continuous Improvement methods.
  • Equipment Management: Oversee preventive maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of SMT equipment (e.g., screen printers, placement machines, ovens).
  • Quality Assurance: Collaborate with Quality and Engineering teams to resolve process issues, implement corrective actions, and ensure IPC-A-610 compliance.
  • Material Coordination: Work closely with supply chain and inventory teams to ensure timely availability of components, feeders, and consumables for uninterrupted production.
  • Metrics & Reporting: Monitor and report on key performance indicators (KPIs) such as first-pass yield, throughput, downtime, and line efficiency.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Interface with NPI, Test, and Final Assembly teams to support product launches and ensure smooth handoffs between production stages.

Supervisory Responsibility
This position oversees various positions within Production, including Leads and Operators and is responsible for the employee life cycle of these employees.
Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. The noise level in the work environment is usually low to moderate.
Physical Demands
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, use fine hand motor skills/dexterity, use repetitive motions, and lift and/or move up to 15 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Travel
Little to no travel is expected for this position.
Required Education and Experience


  • Proven experience in SMT manufacturing operations, preferably in high-mix, High and Low-volume environments.
  • Strong understanding of PCBA processes, IPC standards, and SMT equipment.
  • Leadership experience with a focus on team development and operational excellence.
  • Proficiency in data analysis and manufacturing software (MES, ERP, SPC tools).



Preferred Education and Experience


  • Experience in a contract manufacturing environment.
  • IPC-A-610 certification.
