Supervisor Patient Flow Diagnostic Imaging

Summary:

Under the general supervision of the Director, Imaging Operations and according to established policies and procedures, coordinates and directs activities of Radiologic Technologists, Radiology Lead Technologists, and support personnel performing a variety of duties within all sections of Diagnostic Imaging. Works in conjunction with each modality manager to coordinate staff and work assignments to provide for efficient patient flow and effective processing of diagnostic exams to the physician for use in diagnosis and treatment of patients. Ensures adherence to established standards of safety and quality. Provides functional guidance to supervisory, technical and support personnel. Prepares and maintains records and reports related to activities.

Responsibilities:

PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The primary responsibility of the Supervisor is to facilitate flow throughout all imaging modalities in the Department including, but not limited to:

a. Resolving conflict related to operational issues (including Technologists, Technologist Assistants, Radiologists, RNs, MDs.)

b. Facilitates debriefings after conflicts arise to ensure that all stakeholders have an opportunity to review concerns

c. Demonstrates respectful communication.

d. Manages all resources to support the throughput of patients.

e. Evaluates capacity and identifies capacity concerns early.

1. In coordination with physicians, plans the efficient flow of patients by arranging patient examinations and coordinating personnel work assignments to ensure use of resources. Considers daily volume of examination orders, type of imaging required, anticipated length of examination and availability of equipment, facilities, and personnel. Modifies schedule as necessary to meet emergency needs, including requirements and requests from satellite units.

2.Supervises leads and technologists within all diagnostic modalities of the Diagnostic Imaging Department.

3.Leads the coordination of surge responses and continuously assesses the response process.

4.Analyzes and provides feedback to the modality managers regarding volume trends in ED and inpatient acuity.

5.Assists in developing and implementing of policies, procedures and protocols relating to the provision of diagnostic radiology services.

6.Assists in assessing and defining appropriate staffing levels in areas of responsibility.

7.Works with the Imaging Quality Director and modality managers to investigate and resolve events and complaints received from physicians, staff, nurses, or patients relative to quality, employee performance, length of wait or other issues as they arise.

8.Prepares and maintains records and reports related to activities such as patient statistics, exam orders, problems and resolutions, or other records and reports as needed.

9.Creates and fosters environment conductive to optimum staff development, employee relations and professional imaging practice.

10.Maintains and enhances own professional expertise through participation in professional seminars and meetings and through active pursuit of advanced courses in radiologic technology and management.

11.Establishes and promotes appropriate relationships both internally and externally. Organizes and participates as a member of committees within and outside of the Hospital.

Other information:

BASIC KNOWLEDGE:

Registration through the American Registry for Radiologic Technologists as well as two years formal training in an approved School of Radiologic Technology required. Additional course work in management and/or business desirable.

Current and valid license from the Department of Health to practice in the State of Rhode Island (If applicable).

Demonstrates supervisory and managerial abilities necessary to coordinate and direct the activities of a large staff consisting of Lead Technologist, Radiologic Technologists, and support personnel.

Through knowledge of technical aspects of diagnostic imaging procedures to assure adherence to accepted procedures and to provide technical guidance when appliable.

Interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with all levels of Hospital personnel, representatives of outside vendors, administrative and subordinate personnel as well as patients and families.

Possess the ability to manage critical issues relating to patient care and changing organizational climate.

Analytical and organization skills to effectively plan and coordinate work activities and patient flow to assess quality of procedures, evaluate performance and to prepare and maintain related records.

Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to provide care patients with consideration of aging processes, human development stages and cultural patterns in each step of the care process.

EXPERIENCE:

At least three years of progressively more responsible experience as an Imaging Technologist in a hospital setting, including experience in management, coordinating and directing activities of others.

CT or MRI technologist experience preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMNETS:

Physical ability to move and position equipment and patients when functioning as a Technologist.

INDEPENDENT ACTION:

Independently functions within the department's policies and practices.Refers specific complex problems to manager when clarification of departmental policies and procedures are needed.

SUPERVISION:

Supervisory responsibility for up to 100 FTEs.
