POSITION SPECIFICS

The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) at Penn State Harrisburg seeks an Instructional Designer (ID) to collaborate with faculty to design and develop in-person, hybrid, and online courses, develop instructional materials, and create other teaching/learning resources. This position requires an on-campus presence within a hybrid flexible work arrangement.

The Instructional Designer (ID) in the Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) serves as a project leader working collaboratively with faculty and peers on the course development team to design and develop in-person, hybrid, and online credit courses, to develop instructional materials, and to create other teaching/learning resources, with an emphasis on the integration of technologies, accessible digital content, and a solid understanding of instructional design theory. The ID will use LMS systems, technologies, effective instructional design and pedagogical practices, and communication strategies to meet the objectives of the tasks and projects.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Understanding and application of instructional design and pedagogical concepts and theories, as well as adult learning theories, as part of effective pedagogy in an inclusive and continuous learning environment.

  • Understanding and application of accessibility requirements for digital course materials.

  • Strong listening, collaboration, and problem-solving skills are needed to provide one-to-one support to faculty.

  • Self-direct tasks and projects, with minimal supervision.

  • Understanding and familiarity with various educational technologies and integration of such technologies as part of effective pedagogy in an inclusive and continuous learning environment, including collaboration with faculty to implement such technologies to enhance classroom learning outcomes.

  • Responsible for managing development of multiple courses, including scope, objectives development and alignment with assessments and content, timeline maintenance with applicable faculty, resource management, quality assurance, accessibility optimization, project documentation and reports, and content flow.

  • Promote a culture that is conducive to effective relationships among various faculty and staff and ensures safe practices and environmental consciousness are exhibited in decisions.

  • Interpret and communicate information, ideas and instructions clearly, accurately and persuasively both verbally and in writing including materials intended for distribution.

  • Incorporate new facts and ideas into group processes and apply creative thinking to develop new solutions.

Tasks may include but are not limited to:

  • Provide consultation to faculty and staff in the design and structure of instructional solutions for inclusive, engaging, accessible, and collaborative learning, including individual and group consultations related to course design, redesign, accessibility, and development to ensure instructional integrity of course development projects through a method of systematic design and clear course standards and objectives, including outcomes assessment.

  • Collaborate with faculty, fellow team members, and information/instructional technology staff to resolve issues related to technology use in teaching, including application assessment, pedagogy, deployment methodologies, and integration strategies, among other strategies, and consult with other instructional designers to develop solutions for academic programs, departments, and similar units.

  • Assist with curriculum development, including coordination with the course development team and management of workflow and communication among team members.

  • Define, implement and coordinate projects and related research with faculty, and disseminate results and findings through reports, publications, and presentations, as appropriate, including the presentation of research and effective practices through workshops, conferences, consultations, and website resources.

  • Create and maintain repositories with instructional resources related to effective pedagogy.

  • Act as liaison with university organizations, other campuses, committees and task forces that promote instructional design, learning theory, and technology innovations, including leading collaborative campus-wide events focusing on pedagogical and technological concepts and practices.

  • Design and facilitate professional development in instructional design, accessibility, and pedagogical strategies for faculty.

Education & Experience:

  • The Advanced level requires a minimum of a Master's Degree and 3+ years of relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience for the Advanced level. For the instructional designer position, relevant experience is defined as classroom teaching experience and instructional design experience in education.

  • Working knowledge of Canvas or similar LMS is required.

  • Demonstrated collaboration and problem-solving skills required.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective professional relationships required.

  • Background in STEM and STEM education is strongly preferred.

  • Knowledge of Universal Design for Learning and digital accessibility is preferred.

  • Background in the integration of educational technology is a plus, including knowledge of and experience with immersive experiences / virtual reality.

MINIMUM EDUCATION, WORK EXPERIENCE & REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS

SALARY & BENEFITS

The salary range for this position, including all possible grades, is $56,200.00 - $81,500.00.
