Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Data Scientist at UL Standards & Engagement. This is a hybrid opportunity based in Evanston, IL OR Raleigh-Durham, NC office.

The Data Scientist will support a diverse portfolio of standards and data science initiatives to advance the mission of UL Standards & Engagement (ULSE) to make the world safer, more secure, and sustainable. The Data Scientist will analyze complex data to identify trends and opportunities that inform standards development and contribute to the advancement of evidence-based decision-making. Through the application of statistical modeling, machine learning and predictive analytics, the Data Scientist will enable the organization to anticipate emerging issues, measure effectiveness and support the continuous improvement of safety standards

What you'll learn and achieve:

As the Data Scientist, you will play a key role in the rapid growth of UL as you:

  • Independently lead data science projects from design through implementation. Develop and validate models, interpret complex datasets, and translate insights into actionable recommendations.

  • Formulate analytical approaches to solve a range of complex problems. Apply independent judgment in selecting methods, assessing results, and refining solutions.

  • Perform data analysis, statistical modeling, and predictive analytics to identify trends, opportunities, and insights that support organizational goals.

  • Aggregate, transform, and integrate large, diverse datasets from retrospective and real-time sources to build robust analytical models, test hypotheses, and identify emerging trends.

  • Design and implement software systems, analytical pipelines, and algorithms to automate data processing, conduct scalable analyses, and enable real-time data insights.

  • Prepare compelling proposals, presentations, dashboards, and visualization tools that translate complex data into clear, story-driven communications for technical and non-technical audiences.

  • Leverage Azure OpenAI for developing advanced generative AI applications, including implementing function-calling features for streamlined model integration.

  • Support integration of data science into standards development process to improve decision-making. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop and implement advanced analytics solution, ensuring alignment with broader initiatives and strategic priorities.

  • Effectively communicate analytical findings, decisions and rationale to end-users and stakeholders. Ensure understanding through clear written summaries, verbal updates, and internal presentations, actively contributing to knowledge sharing across teams or functions.

  • Make notable contributions to shared team goals and independently manage workload effectively, using appropriate communication and adherence to deliverable and timeline expectations.

  • Supports effective coordination of tasks, mentor junior team members, and ensures accountability for team deliverables.

  • Maintain continued awareness of industry trends and external context related to the portfolio.

  • Perform other duties as directed.

  • Strategic thinker with ability to innovate and adapt in a dynamic industry landscape

Professional education and experience requirements for the role include:

  • Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering or related field. Advanced degree preferred.

  • Minimum 3 years of related work experience in data and statistical analysis.

  • Experience manipulating large datasets, utilizing databases for advanced data management, and familiarity with general purpose programming language such as Hadoop.

  • Proficiency in Python, SQL, or similar programing languages for data analysis and modeling.

  • Experience in Natural Language Processing (NLP) preferred.
