IT@JH Office of Deputy CIO is seeking a Data Engineer who is responsible for the data architecture and integration of university processes, systems and data to improve reporting and analytics across functions, offices and schools. This includes the architecture, design and implementation of infrastructure and operations for the University Data Warehouse (UDW), complementary Lakehouse, and other modern data technologies.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Assist with the design, production, and maintenance of data pipelines for data acquisition, management, and transformation, and back-end code development to power data web applications and convert raw data into usable information.
  • Contribute to writing and maintenance of ETL/ELTs that operate on a variety of structured and unstructured sources.
  • Assist with the development and maintenance of web data scraping systems for automatic data acquisition.
  • Assist design data architecture and provide ongoing support.
  • Assist with input/output data from databases and perform queries.
  • Assist in the creation scripts to clean, transform, and analyze data.
  • Contribute to production data pipelines using data warehousing systems.
  • Create and implement production software to monitor data quality and detect data anomalies.
  • Perform daily manual data quality assurance tasks.
  • Support, maintain, and troubleshoot the software infrastructure.
  • Source data, conduct analyses, visualize data, and generate insights to support ongoing research projects and other requests across the organization.
  • Assist developers, analysts, data scientists, researchers, policy experts, and other partners.
  • Communicate with Division leadership, and others on the team.
  • Collaborate with external partners, contractors, and vendors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

On-Call Rotation

  • Seven day on-call rotation required


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Five years of related work experience focused within database management and design and business requirement gathering.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Five years progress responsibility for data architecture in complex environment, extensive experience with relational, analytic, and other primary data and BI development approaches
  • Implementation and support experience with large-scale real-time and batch ETL/ELT for data ingestion and integration
  • Experience in dimensional modeling, student systems and information, APIs, advanced SQL, Power BI, Fabric, Azure, pipelines

Total Rewards
The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University's salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will ultimately depend on multiple factors, which may include the successful candidate's geographic location, skills, work experience, market conditions, education/training and other qualifications. Education and Experience Equivalency
Please refer to the job description above to see which forms of equivalency are permitted for this position. If permitted, equivalencies will follow these guidelines: JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.
